Took my dad to the hospital the other night..because he had this happen to him. In fact, the ER doctor called it the most impressive he'd ever seen. (I'll get a picture up soon)

What causes this? He was asleep and woke up to go to the bathroom and his eye was bothering him, so he looked in the mirror and there it was.
Dad has had 3 strokes (my mother is convinced that this was another one) and is on Plavix.
He said he didn't recall coughing or sneezing ar anything that would rapidly constrict blood vessels..he was oozing blood from his eye though.

Ok, the white of the eye (and other parts, including the inside of the eyelids) is covered by a layer of clear cells called the conjunctiva. If you examine your eye in a mirror, you'll see a bunch of little blood vessels in the whites of your eyes feeding the tissues of the outer surface of the eye. If one of these opens up for some reason, blood will leak out and seep around the area of bleeding. This is visible outwardly as a red spot on the white of the eye and is called a subconjunctival hemorrhage.

(sub=under hemorrhage = bleeding...so subconjunctival hemorrhage means bleeding under the conjunctiva.)

These are usually small and no big deal, but in people who are on medications that limit your ability to stop bleeding (e.g., PLAVIX), they can be baddass indeed.

How's your dad doing now?
