Same dream almost twice a week for as long as I can remember: bugs, mice, or other small scary things in my bed. I often tear the covers off the bed and turn on the light before realizing it's a dream.

That sounds like a bad episode of fear factor.

I too have recurring nightmares but mine are of planes crashing into buildings. They are usually very gruesome and graphic. Sometimes I'm there trapped in the WTC trying to find a way out or other times I am witnessing the buildings falling from afar and all the people around me are being killed by falling pieces of plane. Occasionally I am there trying to help people out of the buildings but mostly I am the one in danger. And no matter where I am there is always fire..huge fires everywhere.

These dreams usually happen at least 10 times a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. They really wear me out. I feel so exhausted and scared shitless when I wake up. I can't take them anymore.
And before Sept. 11, all i dreamt about was tornadoes.

I guess the bugs aren't all that bad, after all.

there is always fire..huge fires everywhere.

I once woke up my college roommate and told him that the dorm was on fire. We were both in the hallway when I realized and had to say, "umm, maybe it was a dream..."

NICKEYE - Are you afraid of bugs and mice when awake or is the fear limited to the nightmares? It's interesting that the fear strikes you in bed, a area usually regarded as a safe haven, and you occasionally must throw the covers off before realizing you're dreaming. Are you afraid of your space or person being violated or intruded upon? Is this or similar themes manifested outside of sleep.

GINA - Those nightmares sound like Post Tramautic Stress Disorder. Although the news tries to maintain the illusion that everyone has adjusted perfectly to the terrorist attacks in NY, and the Anthrax scares all over the country, many people are still struggling to come to terms with it. It's scary stuff and it's not surprising that you're still frightened by it.

You're not alone. Many people are still traumatized by the attack. This isn't surprisng given how horrible it was.

You'll probably work it through eventually, at your own pace, but you may want to consider speaking to a counselor as it has lasted more than 4 weeks, the baseline for a PTS diagnosis.
