I know they are supposed to blow down on you. Like a regular stand fan is supposed to be pointed at you.

As far as i can tell, unlike the winter(where you are supposed to have it blowing up to circulate the warm air up over and then down the room), there is no real reason to have them on to circulate the warm air from the ceiling to go the bottom.

I think once the a/c does it job there is no real reason in the summer to have the ceiling fans on. Other than to stir up your cool less humid air with your hot humid air.

If you think about it. Once your thermostat registers a certain temp the warm air above it isnt going to creep down to replacing the cooler air but yet go out of the top of your house to take the cooler air up with it. Or so.

Any one else?

we use cailing fans and towar fans in my house instead of a/c. if you are using a/c I dont really see the point in using a fan

In our house we have Vista A/Cs so we use fins to circulate the air.

Depending upon the situation, I think the air movement helps. I don't particularly like "stagnant" air and can feel warm even in a cool room if there isn't some slight air movement to help pull the moisture off my skin.

Of course I don't have ceiling or cailing fans in my apartment and use stand/tower fans, so the issue is a little different. I can move the cooler air around without pulling warmer air down. But I will use a ceiling fan if that is what Is available where I am.

I always keep a flan nearby during hot summer days

I had the same thoughts as you so I experimented.

We have Central Air, Ceiling Fans in the Living Room and Bedroom. In all circumstances the rooms with the fans were cooler than the rooms that didn't have the fans. This was done with and without the AC on. These rooms were also warmer in the winter with the rotation reversed and kept on low.

I am sure it differs from house to house, but that's what we found.

Your air conditioner is a dehumidifier. So if you are moving the warm air down you are bringing down more humid air as well

Was this down with a thermometer? Or was this you FEELING the room was cooler?

We have 2 ceiling fans and an attic fan. We also have a few oscillating fans. The AC only goes on at night about an hour before bed and it's set to shut off a few hours after that. I grew up without AC so it doesn't really bother me. The attic fan rules, it sucks all the hot air out of the house. I just can't run it when we have thunderstorms because that is what drew the lightning to our house when it got hit years ago. That was a fun time.

 Quit fighting so hard. Your science makes sense, but it is largely a matter of personal preference.

Some people prefer the physical feeling of moving air, and for those of us that sweat a lot the air movement tends to feel cooler even if the ambient room temp may be a degree or two warmer.

im not fighting. im just stating facts. :innocent: promise.

also while you sweat and you have air move over you it evaporates quicker giving you that cool feeling through the phase change.

also that is why in India and such places they eat hot food. To sweat and perspire.

My Boss's Father-in-law is a contractor that does houses and says that in this area there are a lot of regulation for vents and such for attics now. He says they are required to have a ton of ventilation.

1 Digital thermometer with 2 different probes. 1 Analog thermometer. Trust me I was suprised, but it seemed to work as advertised. I am so convinced this worked that the house we are currently building will have 6 ceiling fans installed.

We have a lot of ventilation. There are levers on each side of the house (1 on each side where the peak is). You have to open the windows and sliding door to allow the air to circulate. They are awesome, but without the proper ventilation it would probably make the house implode. Supposedly the fan has the power of a plane engine but I really don't want to find out!

That is the best thing to use in summer. Getting the heat out of the attic/crawl space will make the entire house easier to cool.
