my brother goes by a nickname of his middle name. the only time he ever uses his first name is when he is signing things and uses W. Cory (insert last name)

I think it's usually because the first name is bad or there may be other reasons.

I have a college friend (whose father is british). His name is James Richard (middle name) (last name). The name is a family name going back several generations. He goes by Rich, his father goes by James, his grandfather by Rich, etc.

I haven't seen his name listed lately, but I think on business cards, etc., he may go by J. Richard (last name).

I actually use my initials when signing work e-mails etc. I don't mind my last name, but hate my first name. My signature is the first letter of my first name and my last name.
