What the hell do buttons underneath postings do??

I am just curious what the hell are the buttons supposed to do underneath when you are posting...cause they do not work for me. I know that I have many posts, but how do you paraquote someone too?? I still have not figured out those little tricks?? Cause whenever I hit the buttons underneath to do a quote or underline, etc. It just pops in some binary thing...

Doog...When you hit the "Quote" button, the following should appear:

{quote}
{/quote}

Except with these brackets "[]". Then you merely cut and paste someone else's post in between. I don't know why they're not working for you, but you can do it manually, and it works just as well. The code for italics is {i} {/i}, but again with the "[]" brackets. Give it a shot.
