View Full Version : Diving/Flopping in sports: Skill or sissy move

Crosby is a known diver and is hammered on for it. The only time I ever see random soccer highlights is when someone makes an insane dive to draw a call. It happens in football also.
So, do you think being a habitual diver or someone who makes a habit out of drawing a call by over reacting to a simple move is a skill or a sissy move? I think in American sports it's under control, and I sort of enjoy it since it isn't out of control. I honestly don't follow soccer at all but I've noticed in the past year or two it's gotten a lot more exposure just because of the awful diving and flopping on the ground like a 18 Wheeler just hit you.

Flopping was getting out of hand 2 years ago in the NBA because of the influx of foreign born players. Then the league saw it was a problem and cracked down hard on it. It's gotten so much better. Now, if they could just get the other calls right...

Soccer is the worst for taking a dive. And now that its getting some TV coverage the faking is really shown. A guy goes down like he was shot and it turns out they weren't even touched.

Has it always been that way though and just now getting a lot of exposure for it? Or is the diving in soccer a new fad?
My favorite I've ever seen is the guy who dived at a flag.

The Spurs are still pretty good at it.
Of course it's a sissy move but if the refs believe you it's a skill.

I have a problem with the way the NHL handles diving. More often than not they will call a player for diving and THEN give a penalty to the other player for hooking or tripping. Well, if he hooked/tripped then how the fuck can the other guy get called on diving? shit like this holds the NHL back, and just pisses me the fuck off.

If its done once in awhile, when it could really help your team, I consider it a skill. Kind of like making sure you slide into the second baseman to break up a double play.
But when its done constantly (Crosby was a perfect example) and by people that already get the benefit calls because of their star power, well then its just a pussy move.

I'd rather see Crosby dive and make a great play than let one get by him not diving.

its garbage but i blame the refs
if u see a guy act like he just got hit by an 18 wheeler and 5 seconds later is running down the field or court then the ref shouldnt allow that player to get any benefits in future dive attempts

I'm watching soccer right now and seen at least three flops during this World Cup qualifier. It's ridiculous and soooo obvious- and the one dumbass on South Korea killed a very good shot his team had on goal because he had to do his act

This does suck, but I think the refs are just taking a REALLY hard line on diving to avoid players embellishing penalties to get the ref's attention. This includes the kind of shit like holding a guy's stick under your arm after a small hook and snapping your head back like JFK after someone makes contact with yout helmet. This crap stops the play and slows down the game, so I get the point. But it does suck.

I can't stand a flopping goaltender...Chris Osgood and Cristobal Huet are two of the worst ones i've seen
And this guy, Jakob Markstrom, who put on a clinic in flopping like a fish at this years WJC
