Misawa died taking a suplex during a match earlier this morning (Japan time)

Very surprising

WOW. One of my all-time favorites. I am very happy I got to see him perform live.

Wait...wrestling is REAL in Japan?

or was he just too old to be exerting himself?

Not real, but they go at it a bit harder than over here.

...how does a back suplex rate a "7" on the 1-10 danger scale?

1 would be landing flat on the back, 10 would be pretty much dropped on the top of the head.

Yeah, but isn't a back suplex a pretty routine move, with a landing on the back-shoulders, even given the stiff style of Japanese wrestling?

He probably had a heart attack from over-exertion. It wasn't the move that killed him, it was probably just a ton of other stuff.

They do a version of the back suplex in Japan called the Backdrop Driver, where the wrestler basically get planted on his head. Sick.

I'm sure getting knocked out was just a small part of the equation.

If you're a wrestling fan and you haven't seen it, you must watch the 1997 All Japan Champion Carnival Final (http://www.youtube.com/user/mlaslo1984#user/C815F3DADDB6C3A7/8/cUBCGIjF_wM) - Round Robin with Misawa, Kobashi and Kawada. Best thing I have ever seen as a wrestling fan. This youtube user has like 10 installments covering the 3 matches.

I don't like watching Japanese wrestling. They're all speaking some sort of moon-man language.

Ha, honestly, watching a Miyazaki film with just english translations makes you miss half of the meaning of the film. Japanese is a brilliant and difficult language.

Apparently it wasn't a heart attack, it was spinal cord damage. Guess he was dropped on his neck.

There is footage on YouTube of medics trying for like 10 minutes to revive him...really a sad scene.
