View Full Version : Are there some things that are just evil?

I was watching that show Taboo, on the history channel. They show different cultures that do things that us in America find to be Taboo.
I was watching it and started wondering if there is anything that is just evil to every culture, let alone every one in America. I'm hard pressed to find something.

I don't believe there is anything inherently evil in this world.

Wow this is a tough one. Everything I think of is acceptable somewhere. Cannibalism...puppy killing....nun beating......I'm at a loss.

disease is evil.
dont matter who you are.
it can kill you
there is no good in disease
no culture has ever embraced the diseased.

Scientifically, disease can be a good thing. Evolution wouldn't happen without disease.

immune systems, not just humans, all animals and plants resistances

Probably every species on the planet. A disease wipes out everyone but those that carry the gene preventing from getting that disease. The disease then disappears because no one else is alive who can carry the disease.

immune systems
thats not evolving thats building up an immunity.
if we had evolved our immune system would prevent sickness from ever happening.
do we get less sick than people through out history? not through medicine, just through physical resistance?

there is no gene that prevents disease
there is only the fact that disease will only attack a specified thing

but that does. Build up an immunity and the ones who dont die and the ones who do reproduce and after awhile only the ones immune to the disease go on. And the disease basically dies out. Thats evolution

Human evolution has all but stopped because of modern medicine.
Don't forget that diseases are evolving too. Hence, the swine flu. This is nothing more than an evolved version of the common flu. The flu strain evolves so rapidly that a new vaccine is needed every year.

There are genes that prevent or cause disease. Cancer for example is caused by mutations in your genes. These mutations can be cause by heredity or environmental factors. If you are predisposed to develop cancer, you have a much higher risk that a gene mutation will result in a tumor.

That's funny, I was thinking you watched the rerun of Death Note all about evil. And yes, I believe there are.

ok so back to the point.
disease is evil
completely
so much so that not only does nature evolve away from disease
but, as humans we also are aware of the conditions which will cause you to befall this evil
and we advise against it.
yet to little avail
disease is the ultimate evil

Yes to emotion bound human beings, disease is evil because it takes away our loved ones.
To plants and animals, disease can be a good thing because it weeds out the weak and strengthens the species as a whole.

the disease doesnt cause the strengthening
it is only there for the death
the species surviving are ones who didnt die from the disease taking advantage of the dead bodies, not taking from the disease itself
something evil can have non evil side effects but still be evil

The species is strengthened because those carrying the genes making them susceptible to the disease die. Therefore the living members of the species go on the procreate without the chance of propagating the weak genes.

Look up any genetic disease and be glad your parents didn't have it to give to you.
There are millions of bacteria humans have developed resistance too. But, there are bacteria we are still susceptible to, hence antibiotics and MRSA.

Selective breeding is what drives evolution.
Humans are a hard case study because we have medicine that prevents evolution.
For simplicity's sake, look at bacteria. It is constantly evolving because antibiotics ('disease' to bacteria) kill off the weaker bacteria that is susceptible to our antibiotics therefore only the strongest bacteria are able to reproduce and pass along the antibiotic resistant genes.

I know some people like to think that the concepts of "good" and "evil" are entirely subjective from culture to culture, but there are universally "evil" things.
Preying upon the weak for reasons other than survival is evil no matter how you slice it.
Raping an infant? Beating a small child to death?
Pretty indefensible.

I have to disagree with you on this. Take "raping an infant": the term rape is different from culture to culture. in the U.S., teens that consent to sexual activity is still considered rape, and it's considered rape if you fuck your wife and she tries to stop you. In other countries, that shit flies. In some cultures in Papua New Guinea (if i remember correctly), it is the norm for young boys to blow/ be blown by the elders of the tribe to gain their youth.
Also, I recently watched some news program where many African parents are giving their kids exorcisms (consisting of beating them with shoes, and many times are brought to the brink of death) and if it doesn't work, the kids are left alone, forever, as to not infect the rest of the family. I assume that the family sees it as protecting themselves instead of abandoning their kids, but it is a norm.
