View Full Version : Best Westerns
No, not the shitty motels. I'm talking the 10 greatest Westerns ever put down on film.
Rank 'em in order and we'll have the ultimate list.

I have to tell you, westerns just haven't been a big factor during my lifetime. I'm sure I missed a few, forgot a few but they seemingly have fallen out of favor over the last few decades.
I did like Tombstone a lot, but I highly doubt it actually counts.

I hate you. I was all ready to talk about continental breakfasts and shit

I was never a big fan either until the past few years or so.
There's a lot more there than shoot 'em up Wild West horse shit.
If it's done right.
The genre does have more than it's share of shitty action movies, though, as well as some incredibly slow paced and boring ones.

I'm not a big western fan either, but the one that always jumps into my head when I hear the word "western", is Shane, starring Alan Ladd Jr.
whenever it was on TV, I would watch it with my dad, and he would always tell me about the first time he saw it in the theater, when he was a kid. he would provide such facts as, 'Ladd was so short he had to film a lot of scenes standing on crate'.
The book was good too.
Once I get out of the shower and get myself all pretty, I'll see what I can pull together.

I like W's when in the mood to party and hang, however the Westin beds and showers fucking rule. Marriotts are nice as well, but the Rens are usually even better.

The Penguins in the lobby don't acknowledge you either, even if you're waiting there for them to acknowledge.

I seem to have an issue with hotel toilets. Out of the last 10 hotels I've stayed at, three had toilet issues.

Bullshit.
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is number one.
Nevermind the "spaghetti western" nonsense thats always brought up.....its this film that made the genre.
Unfortunately, the popularity of the flick will inevitably result in tons of detractors, and blah blah blah.
The movie rocks, Eastwood at his cowboy best, great soundtrack (clearly), historical underpinnings as per the civil war backdrop, and Lee Van Cleef - the baddest of the bad.

I am surprised no one has brought up "The Proposition" yet.
Another recent one I liked was "Appaloosa".

Just to throw a few more in there:
Fistful of Dollars
The Outlaw Josey Wales
The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Searchers
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
High Noon
Unforgiven
Magnificient Seven
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

I never saw Johnny Guitar, but any time the others are on I will watch them.
I add tombstone to the "I always watch" List
I'm still compiling my list, but I know Jeremiah Johnson will definitely be there somewhere.
I'll NEVER turn that off if I come across it.

He was WAYYYY better than Orbit Bubblemint. But almost everything is.
I'm weird about westerns. I love most of them when I actually watch them, but I'll almost never watch one when I'm searching the channels. And I've NEVER been the least bit interested in any of the old western TV series.

I havent seen a ton of westerns, but this is basically a list of the ones I have seen that I loved...
1. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
2. Tombstone
3. A Fistfull of Dollars
4. The Magnificent Seven
5. For a Few Dollars More
6. Unforgiven
7. 3:10 to Yuma
8. Hang em High
9. Young Guns
10. Back to the Future 3
(That last one was a joke)
It is 20 years since Lonesome Dove premiered, not a film, but you won't find a better western than this.
Another great film that is much overlooked because of Jimmy Stewart's later work in westerns , is Destry Rides Again from 39.

I agree. Lonesome Dove has been #1 on my list ever since it aired. It's epic and awesome.
Unforgiven is a solid second on my list.
After that, in no particular order, I like many that have been mentioned here in previous posts. The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, Open Range and The Proposition have been the best westerns in the past decade. Appaloosa was mentioned above, but I didn't like the character story and found it frustrating.
Not mentioned yet, but should be - Silverado and The Outlaw Josey Wales.

BTW....Hampton Inn owns in the bargain priced hotel business

True Grit.
3:10 to Yuma was one of the worst Westerns I ever saw.
And for as great as Magnificent Seven was, I feel compelled to say the Seven Samurai, upon which it was based, was much better.
