Women's business suits in the 80s...

As a kid in the era, I vaguely remember my mother wearing those big 1980s business outfits with the huge shoulder pads.

What was the deal with the shoulder pads on womens business suits/dresses in the 80s? Was there any purpose to this? How did this become fashionable?

I have no idea but they're hideous. I've been watching Golden Girls all the time now cuz there was a marathon and I'm Tivoing it and I laugh every episode at the clothes. Especially Bea Arthur. Check out these gems:
