View Full Version : Today's Music: Where Is The Talent?

Back in the day: Hendrix, Dylan, Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Clapton, Janis, etc.
Today's music? Kid Rock? Laughable. Limp Bizkit? Sad.
Hell, what about Motown and Philly International? Is there any good soul out there today?
Can anyone play guitar anymore? OK, call me old.;)

I've wondered who's the 'new' bands of the 90s are. like the bands that defined the 90s.

I'm not much of a music fan, I don't know much, I don't know the really obscure bands, I don't hold CD but from what I've noticed and heard with talent are bands like STP, Foo Fighters, and Radiohead. But I'm not a big music person, this is just what I'm assuming. I'm probably completely and utterly wrong.

And of course, The D

there is a lot of talent out there today... you've just got to know where to find it. you really can't hear very much good music on the radio - there's a reason (well, more than one, but...) we all listen to talk. the bands that you're talking about - limp bizkit, kid rock - are just some of the awful things you'll hear on radio and mtv. but they are not representative of all that is out there.

a short list of some current bands that are actually worth listening to:

bright eyes
radiohead
vast
elliott smith
the white stripes
bjork
idlewild
weezer
dashboard confessional
rainer maria
cake
rufus wainwright
andrew bird's bowl of fire

i could go on and on... but i guess i've made my point

I'm not sure, but it seems these things are related to age. I remember when is was in my 20's & early 30's I would go to just about any show. Now, everything else just seems more important. But i do cry when angels deserve to DIIIEEEE!!!!

amen to this post. the following bands deserve to watch their mothers get raped by a syphilus infested mental patient: Creed, Limp Biskit, Lincoln park, Staind, Incubus, and sum 41. i'd rather lick the sores of an aborted fetus than listen to these bands. now bands that do not suck are: pearl jam, beck, weezer, U2, Blind Melon, Nirvana, and that's all i can think of right now.

it's true,
it's damn true!

Seriously.
STOP LISTENING TO THE MAJOR RADIO STATIONS FOR NEW MUSIC!
Listen to college stations, and the smaller stations in local areas. Unfortunatly, most local stations only get to play anything new late at night. Inky could probably chime in on this better than I can as far as radio stations go. But also, look for new stuff on the net, search mp3 sites, go to local clubs. Personally, I can't stand what's "new and cool" as far as MTV and radio is concerned. But I still go see amazing live bands all the time. Hoboken has Maxwell's, New Brunswick has The Court Tavern, NY has a ton of places, too many to mention.
Like I've said before, I'll be happy to clue some people in on stuff if you want to drop me an IM or email.

I think talent is an overrated component of art. Sure, it helps greatly tohave talent, but it takes practice, hard work and the desire to try something new and different that produces great music. I think there's lots of talent out there - in fact, there are probably more talents musicians out there today than back in the 60s. Unfortunately, i feel like the art of writing songs has been lost, especially in rock music. Seriously, some of the best songwriting I hear today is in pop music! I think a combonation of music business practices and lack of hard work has ended up being detrimental to music. Think how much time passes between albums these days! Groups in the Sixties were releasing two full albums a year!

As far as good music not being on the radio - I agree with this to an extent, and it does have a lot to do with the consolidation of radio stations under a few big companies, but don't forget that bands in the past had hits on radio while still being cutting edge.

About a year ago, Camille Paglia (of all people) wrote a special guest editorial in one of the popular guitar magazines. Her contention was that as exciting and dynamic an art form that Rock and Roll is, it is a somewhat simplistic one, and the greatest innovations have already occured. She believes that it would be impossible for any new band to be as fresh and mind-blowing as The Stones or Zeppelin were back in the day.

I can't say that I totally disagree.

I have to say Heckler in brief that there isnt anymore talent. And those that show potential are given a dump truck full of money to practically lose the talent that they have for the good of the very anti-capitalist corporation...

How come all of the new bands pout, wear black and have those nerdy rectangular eyeglasses and whine when they "sing"? ;)

Just wait til my band gets going... ;)

It takes a brave band to not give in to changes in the face of prevailing trends in the business, but that's what's essential. A lot of bands get their sound changed once they sign with a major and go into the studio, usually for the worse.

Sadly, what we hear and buy is controlled by a handful in the industry.I guess that was always the excitement of "discovering" a band in some small club yourself.

people truly interested in forms of music find it, most people let the industry spoon feed the easily digested portions...
