View Full Version : Dave and Rutgers

It was brought up on the air today that Dave, a graduate of a NJ college that is not Rutgers nor is in the Rutgers system, is a fan of Rutgers.

Ron called him on it several times.

Dave's defense that rooting for a college you didn't go to is a geographic thing, as well as a family thing, even though Dave's family connection to Rutgers is weak at best.

I have conflicting feelings on this. I know where Ron is coming from, but I've also supported Rutgers. However, my connections to Rutgers are a lot deeper than Dave's, especially since my wife is a huge Rutgers supporter and alum.

(and as a qualifier - I don't go around screaming RU RAH RAH everywhere I go. I know the rules of sports "bigamy" since I went to West Virginia. I pay attention to what happens with Rutgers and I've cheered for them when I go to games, but I always want WVU to win out, win more.)

Do you support a school you didn't go to? Why? Or do you think it's not right?

I went to USC for my first two years of undergrad before transferring to Tampa for my last two years. I still follow USC but don't really have a connection with them since I didn't graduate from the school and Tampa is a DII school, although they have some quality teams and have won some NCAA DII championships.

The only school I really support is the one I work at but since I work the press box at the game, I can't really cheer for them at the game.

I can understand rooting for a bigger school if you didn't go to a Division I college or have ties to that school because of family. I'm not really a stickler. I just don't like bandwagon fans. They're the only ones I think are ridiculous.

I went to Bunker Hill. So I have no team

It's not like he can root for Monmouth to get in a BCS game. I think it's acceptable if you went to a smaller (non division 1) school.

I did not go to UT but have always supported them, and when a younger brother of mine graduated from there my support deepened.

i did not go to rutgers but i support them. my school did not have a team, and rutgers is a NJ school and I live close by.

nothing wrong with what Dave is doing. And really, how can anyone tell you what you can be a fan of? there are no rules to fandom, all that stuff is bullshit.

For college football I am fan of FSU becuase my 5th grade football coach was. I am a fan of villanova basketball fan because my friend played there, and I now know the coach from him.

I only attended Rutgers for a half semester. I couldnt afford to live there and the commute was just too much. Thats the only reason I left. Also like 8 people in my family went there.

So they became my team. I have no problem with them being Dave's team.

Especially since the school Dave graduated from isnt an FBS school

I had sex with a chick who went to Arizona State, so I think my connection is pretty strong for me to be a fan of that school.

This topic is dumb.

Be a fan of whatever team you want to be a fan of.

I root of Syracuse and I didn't go there. A couple of my friends did. I don't wear the merchandise or anything like that, but I always root for them when they play. Syracuse football and basketball (and now lacrosse) is just part of the culture of Central NY.

I went to Transylvania, UF and USF. When I was a kid I rooted for FSU football. I live in Tampa and I am a USF season ticket holder so they are my team of primary rooting interest, but I'll always follow the Noles beacause of my childhood allegiances.

i got my 3 degrees from rutgers...
i was there for phil sellers and the undefeated basketball season..

i don't root against rutgers..
but i never rooted for them either...
(except for princeton weekend when we were all wasted)

I WAS THERE FOR NON-SPORTS PURPOSES...
and think the uber-fans.. espec. the older ones...
look ridiculous with their live-and-die with the team attitude...

and since i don't give a rat's ass about the RUTGERS sports programs...
dave can take my spot as a fan of the teams...

I'M NOT USING MY SPOT...

I root for Penn State, just cause I've been a fan of them since I was really young. I went to Rutgers and support them, but I've only been to 1 game since I graduated in '06 and hardly watch them on tv.

Support any school or team you want. Are we really debating whether it is proper to root for one team playing a child's game over another team playing a child's game?
What is there to be so proud of about your hometown, school, etc?
Root for a team that you enjoy watching. Over the top fanaticism is inappropriate no matter what your ties are.

Do you support a school you didn't go to? Why? Or do you think it's not right?

Preface: Sorry for the fucking book. (If I ever get published, this will be my official preface)

I've lived on both sides of the school team fortune lottery... in high school my football team won their first couple championships when I started freshman year... of course, when my older brother played for them, my hometown's team was an utter joke and he wound up not playing anymore because we sucked so bad his own teammate thought it'd be funny to tackle him and wound up screwing up his knee. I rooted heavily for my home team because of that connection. Our coach retired this year, had the honor to coach his last game at Giants Stadium. The man is a saint by my reckoning.

In college my football team was such a horrendous joke that even the suckest of sucking schools could beat The Gettysburg Bullets' asses (yes, they were tastefully called THE BULLETS, with a big snarling angry anthropomorphic cartoon bullet charging, complete with 1920's cartoon limbs- his name was Billy- I consider this as artful as it would be if Littleton's football team adopted the name The Trench-Coat Murderers). Anyway, I fucking hated the Bullets. Never rooted for them, even once. Homefield love? Fuck that. They suck.

When it comes to professional and college level sports that you watch on TV, I am far more of a mercenary because I have no personal connection to any of these teams. I was in a long-term relationship with a Rutgers alum as Matty is now, she loves the Scarlet Knights, but I personally have always hated the Knights, not necessarily because of the team itself, but rather more because I think the fans the team generally has attracted over the years are some of the lowest of the low mouth-breathing bastards who back an underdog only after they think it's winning.

I had no idea I cared this much about this stuff. Good thread Matty. I don't expect anyone to have read this E-tome. :-P

I dunno, why do people care about their country? Sure your country's more important than your favorite sports team, but both things touch on many of the same emotions in people.

Fez, don't you think it's a little hypocritical to support a school that would be anti-gay marriage?

Well, if they can run a 4.3 forty, I guess.

It all depends on if the person takes himself/herself too seriously. If it's "Look, even though I grew up in Bakersfield and barely made it through junior high, I really like USC". If the person can joke about it, who cares? Wear Trojan hats, shirts, whatever. I don't care.

The only time I get annoyed with any college sports support is when people are assholes about it. The middle-aged football boosters at the University of Washington, where I went to school, were some of the lowest forms of life I have ever dealt with. I rooted against the Huskies just so those pricks would be miserable.

This raises an interesting question. Is it right to hate a sports team just because of their fans? Matty, make a new thread. (or don't)[i did]

ha! that's beautiful. I have always preferred the Ducks to Huskies. Cougars, too. Hell, any PAC 10 team. I was at the U of W when Don James was coach. I just hated them. The boosters and D James got busted for corruption when I was there. Rather than admit they were wrong, they whined like little babies. just pathetic. Go Ducks!

Thank you. Blind nationalism is just as bad as fanaticism.
Are you rooting for your school's team because you believe in their mission, their academic standard, their community responsibility? Or because you think by them being good that some how reflects on you?

I root for the Vermont Catamounts, they're the only decent college team in this state. We're still relishing the fact that we beat Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA tournament a few years back.

I wouldn't consider myself a die-hard fan by any means, but I always wish the UCONN Huskies well during hoops season as a matter of home state pride.

I grew up in Illinois and didn't go to the University of Illinois, but I follow their teams passionately. My Dad was an Illinois fan and I just fell into it. In fact, once I moved out to the East Coast and the advent of the internet, my "fandom" got stronger.
