Does it fucking matter? They're on satellite. It's like being pissed off you're not seeing much daylight because you're a turtle's dick. They've been passive aggressive in the past where they act way angrier about some bullshit matter than it warrants, only for it to turn out that there was a lot more going on in the background than what they let on.
Though I must say that I'm pretty pissed off with Sirius for fucking up the weekend replays. Anyone who says Sam and Erock are doing great jobs are ass-sucking sychophants who don't know the difference between a chocolate cake and a shitlate cake.

No they're pretty vocal about it, they hate that Howie gets more press than them.
Hate to break it to them, if you Google news Sirius and iPhone, literally 90% are about how Howard's not on the app.
And, most of the reviews have pretty much panned it mostly for that reason (which is a shame, because it really is a cool app when you start playing around with it).
I thought they had a little bit of a legitimate gripe today, because there has been a big to-do about whether this app is worth a thing with Pandora being free on the iPhone, so you'd think talk is one of the things you have to sell it on, and since you don't have Howard, maybe you throw a bone O&A's way...
But, even if the company had done that today, the story would have still been why does the app not have Howard...no one would have been talking about them anyway.

THEY are claiming it's because Stern is mature content, that they won't put it on the iPhone.
That of course makes no sense, because they have XL channels all over the iPhone app.
So it's got to be a money thing with Stern, or Mel truly believes this iPhone thing is nothing (which is retarded) and that he's not giving up on selling units (which is also retarded).

The official Sirius XM iPhone App went live at midnight Eastern time today, but it's missing one of the top reasons why people have signed up to satellite radio - Howard Stern.
Opie & Anthony's The Virus channel is available, as is many of Sirius XM's music, talk, entertainment channels. Live sports are limited to a handful of channels, but there is sportstalk channels like MLB Home Plate, NFL Radio and NHL Home Ice.
But... no Howard Stern.
On the FAQ, the company explains why certain channels may be missing:
SIRIUS & XM offer all of the channels for which we have mobile performance rights. For that reason, certain channels which may be available on your satellite radio or online radio service may not be available on a mobile device like the iPhone.
So does Sirius XM Radio Inc. not have mobile performance rights to distribute Howard Stern's content? Seems... odd.
and it doesnt matter about the money, because the extra availability would help sirius and stern
and it doesnt matter about the money, because the extra availability would help sirius and stern
This is what I read:
Sirius XM IPhone Application Doesn’t Include Stern (Update1)
Share | Email | Print | A A A
By James Callan
June 18 (Bloomberg) -- Sirius XM Radio Inc., the unprofitable satellite broadcaster, said Howard Stern’s talk show won’t be available on the service it introduced today for Apple Inc.’s iPhone and iPod Touch.
Stern’s broadcasts won’t be offered because of the “mature programming,” according to a Sirius XM customer service representative reached today by telephone.
The iPhone and iPod Touch applications are free for Sirius XM subscribers who already pay a $12.99 monthly fee.
“MLB Play-by-Play,” “NFL Play-by-Play,” and “SIRIUS NASCAR Radio” also won’t be offered on the Apple devices because of licensing rights, the customer service representative said.
Stern attracted an estimated 2 million new subscribers to Sirius after he left CBS Corp. in 2004, according to Bridge Ratings LLC, a media researcher. The host’s five-year agreement, which began in January 2006, cost $500 million and included stock-based incentive payments based on subscriber goals.
Stern left CBS in 2004 after complaining that the U.S. Federal Communications Commission was trying to muzzle him. His CBS broadcasts resulted in fines from the FCC of more than $2 million.
Patrick Reilly, a spokesman for New York-based Sirius XM, declined to comment in an e-mail message.
Sirius XM, which relies on car sales for the biggest source of new customers, lost 404,422 net subscribers in the first quarter for a total of 18.6 million.
Sirius XM fell 6 cents to 34 cents at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The shares have plummeted 86 percent in the past year.
The all-stock purchase of XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. by Sirius in July eliminated the only competition in the U.S. satellite-radio industry. In March, Sirius XM said it would stop providing subscriber and revenue forecasts, citing the collapse of the U.S. auto industry.
The company averted bankruptcy in February after John Malone’s Liberty Media Corp. agreed to buy a 40 percent stake in exchange for $530 million in loans.

This is what I read:
i think sirius is holding onto those channels and will try to charge for mobile access
also, i thought it was funny that the 'bankruptcy bailout' basically only paid 1 employees 5 year contract.
and it doesnt matter about the money, because the extra availability would help sirius and stern
I agree...I don't think it's a negotiation.
I think Mel Karmazin truly believes the Apple thing isn't profitable, and so he's not going to shell out the whole platform at the expense of his units (again, retarded...no one wants crappy Sirius and XM portables).
I remember five years ago or so after Stern first signed with Sirius, there were rumors all the time about a Sirius/Apple collaboration with either an attachment, or incorporating Sirius programming into the older generation iPods.
The stock used to jump every time the rumor came out, and he used to down play the significance any deal of that type would have had.
When the iPhone came out and announced they were creating the app store, a SiriusXM app was a no-brainer.
But they drug their feet for so long on it...there's no explanation other than he doesn't think it's a substantially profitable venture (and that shows he's completely out of touch).
There's no reason it took this long, other than they didn't care about doing it. All they did was basically create a mobile port of the Online Media Player. Not exactly rocket science.

if i remember correctly, sirius spent more on talent and less on unit tech advancement
but xm spent more for better units and paid less for 'talent' (famous names who dont really show up on air)
so now sirius has a chance to spread their product to a whole new demo, who wont have to pay for a unit just for the service
dont they make more off of subscriptions than selling sirius units?

Yeah, XM always spent more on tech.
Sirius was always behind in terms of subscribers and tech, so they really amped up the contract wars and started shelling out the huge deals.
I don't think they make anything off selling units...but let's say they do profit off them...
It doesn't change the fact that they're estimating somewhere around 45 million iPhone users by the end of the year (20-some million now)...and with worldwide distribution (where the American news and talk Sirius carries would draw).
They have to take it seriously, because that is an enormous number of people who are going to have the option of subscribing right at their finger tips.
Mobile content is their only future. They need it in the Blackberry, Palm...that's their chance to grow their way out of this mess. They need to start finding an exit strategy for being "satellite" radio. It's too costly an operation to maintain. Their future is as a content provider for handheld and mobile devices.

The mature content argument does not hold up given some of the channels they are offering. I also really doubt that Sirius did not get all the rights to Stern's show given how big the contract was. My guess is they are hoping to get extra money out of people.

Stern's deal with Sirius is actually pretty brilliant for him.
His company essentially acts as a content provider for Sirius. He owns everything, and they essentially buy the show from The Howard Stern Company, while providing him with the production space as well. So, he (and Don Buchwald) gets to control every aspect of his produced content.

1. The channel description accurately describes what's on the channel, focusing primarily on O&A. They have no basis for bitching about that.
2. Stern's absence is a mistake, but this also happened when Sirius first rolled out their online player. You originally needed a second player for his channels, before they finally merged it into Sirius' online player.
3. I see Mel's name thrown into this discussion a lot. Do people still believe that Mel is sitting in his office wondering how he's going to screw the "bbbbbbbboys"? I highly doubt he had much at all to do with the development of this app. Yet now that it has been released, they have been heavily marketing it.
4. I've stated this before, but can we drop the charade that O&A have as much name recognition as Stern, Jamie Foxx, Oprah, etc.? I'm not saying those names are better at radio than O&A, but if you're trying to sell subscriptions or get attention for the app, those are the names you push. Like it or not, but Stern is a household name; O&A are not. Once consumers have the app, then you introduce them to 202, which is exactly what they are doing.

I wrote something similar on FTB today but it kinda sums it up better.
I don't understand their philosophy. They in one aspect have a don't care attitude cause it's just Danny browses the internet for 70% of the shows lately. Then in another aspect they pretend they care by finding anything to complain about and how the company doesn't push for them. They only need to revisit history but a few years ago and see XM handed them everything they ever wanted on a silver platter to make the show gigantic and they failed to capitalize on it. Why the fuck would Sirius give them a dime when someone else has already been down that road with them.

Before they rename it why not just give them a channel thats on the same number on both platforms.
XM202/Sirius 197 is beyond stupid.
If you want people to find something it has to be as easy as possible to locate.

So was Rick Rolling, and Twitter, two girls one cup, pwned, etc. To be fair, O & A are generally the first mass media place to jump on a lot of things, but thats usually after its been kicking around the internet for a long long time.
