I was just walking down 46th st between 8th and 9th.

There are a TON of pretty good restaurants and its not too far if you're catching a show as well.

You should hit up Artichoke Pizza (328 E 14th St) for sure. Its pretty much a given if you're a fan of the show and visiting NYC.

Is this your first visit to the city or are you just looking for some locals reccs?

Nah, although it is a major port for coke they leave tourists alone because of the major money involved. There were 3 officers including a chief that were busted when I was last down there for bribery thanks to this very understanding of hands off the tourists. Let the coke flow, leave the tourists alone. Sounds like a good policy.

Off the beaten trail things to do:

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is great.
As long as you're downtown check out the New Museum on the Bowery.
You might as well hit Chinatown while you're down there. Then Wall Street's just a short walk away, and worth a look.

More touristy but good things to do:

The top of the Empire State Building. If you've never been to New York before, it's really worth it, as long as the line isn't too long.

Have lunch at the Oyster bar in Grand Central.

What to avoid:

Soho. Don't bother. There's nothing there but Banana Republic.

Times Square. Well, go ahead and walk through it once. Do it at night when it's more interesting.

Feel free to PM me with any questions about hotels, restaurants etc.

Although it has a bad reputation, Wall Street is actually pretty nice and has several things worth seeing, especially the Trinity Church (I believe that's what's on Wall Street).

I'd also recommend Museum of Modern Art, Natural History, and the Met.

As for shows, the best shows in NYC right now are Toxic Avenger the Musical (Off-Broadway) and The Blue Man Group (Off-Off-Broadway). They're the most bang for your buck.

Good one. Kids love walking over the Brooklyn Bridge, but be aware, it's a pretty good walk.

When it's time to come back, you can take the Water Taxi from the Pier underneath the Bridge to Wall Street.

Actually, in August you should definitely take the Water Taxi. Don't take the Circle line cruise. I took it with my parents last year, and unless you get a decent seat it's hard to see everything. The Water Taxi is cheaper and more fun.

Sit on the lawn chairs that are now all over Times Square.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/11/nyregion/11chairs.html

I walked past them last night and was in shock, they look quite terrible. Having Times Square now be traffic free is really weird, having it traffic free and covered in tourists sitting in lawn chairs is even worse.

There are some real tables and chairs around harold square that I would recc over sitting in the middle of advertisements.

It is odd to see a couple hundred people just sitting in the middle of the street staring at flashing flights.

I walked through that too when going to the PATH, having all these roads closed off to have people just sit around is strange.

There have been a shit-ton of threads about this topic over the years so your best bet would be to go to "Search", then "Advanced Search" and then type "New York" with title only.

But be warned, some of these are short threads, they might be dated and you have to wade through a bunch of New York related threads about sports, politics, weather, whatever.

What really sucks is, some of the threads probably start with "NYC", instead of New York. And search doesn't work with 3 or less letters.

This very weekend, in fact! I spent all day today planning an itinerary and picking out a few restaurants and shops I want to visit.
And of course I'll be going to Molly's for a Ron Bennington!

Ok, here's some ideas for food anyway

Pizza-They say one of the famous Rays ,but switch it up . Artichoke on 14th street between 1st & 2nd avenue.Get the artichoke & spinach pizza. One large slice will fill you up. .They even have a place where you can sit down now .

Sushi- Can't beat Nobu , in Tribeca on the west side .

Deli- I know people will recommend Katz's on Houston street , but , in my opinion ,honestly the tastier (fattier) corned beef sandwich you can get at the Carnegie Deli (Broadway, near 55th st) . I know people say the Carnegie is a tourist trap, but the couple of times I've been to Katz's ,the corned beef was pretty dry.

For desserts - of course Molly's, but there's a place that sells only Rice pudding(like , 25 different kinds) .Rice to Riches , on 37 Spring street , in the bowery .

Steaks- Smith & Wollensky on the East side, or Peter Lugers ,in Williamsburg

Places to shop- The Strand, for any book you would like to find .Broadway & 12th .Around the corner on Broadway is Forbidden Planet, a great shop for comics & genre things . If you're more adventurous , The Pleasure Chest on 7th Avenue around 11th street for all your sex toy needs ( I know , but if you've never gone to one ,its a hoot to see how they're using the latest technology to turn people on ).Kiehl's at 3rd avenue & 13th street, sells all kinds of things for facial ,hair, & skin care ( I recommend the Amino acid shampoo, gentle but good. Also the gentle facial wash . ) .Expensive, but good stuff. If you're with a female, expect to spend a bit.

Any other request just ask,& I'll try to think of something

It may not appeal to you, but the New York Public Library (I was at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, 5th Ave and 42nd Street, recently) has some neat stuff there. The tour is quick, about an hour, and it's interesting if you're into books and history. They also have some exhibits that they have there which you may find interesting. For instance, I'm sure you'd find AIDS activism with graphic safe sex guys for men to be very interesting.

Wolfgangs for steak....the 409 greenwich street one is best.

McSorely's old ale house is the oldest nyc bar i believe and a good place to check/start...for a better selection dive bar just venture to bleecker and hit the peculier pub.

PITT doc needs to give pitt stops for pitt tours.

Oh and FUCK MOLLY'S. Why waste your time?!

How long do you spend on escalators that this is an issue?

I can honestly say that this has never been an issue to me on escalators, it's usually not that long of a ride that I feel a need to charge up like it's San Juan hill, but those moving walkways in airports? Walk or move the fuck out of the way, the quicker I get to the proper terminal, the longer I have to drink in whatever overpriced bar they have there.

Completely agree. If you need a rest, sit down, don't block the moving walkway with your ginormous luggage that won't even fit in the overhead bin anyway, so why are you lugging it around, blocking my way when I've only got 7 minutes to get to the next terminal, only to find that my flight was delayed anyway....wait....what were we talking about again?

When I commuted to a job in DC on the train and Metro, I was on very long escalators several times every day. Every connection I made, I'd miss if I was delayed by even a few minutes.

I can honestly say that this has never been an issue to me on escalators, it's usually not that long of a ride that I feel a need to charge up like it's San Juan hill, but those moving walkways in airports? The only moving walkway I've been on in recent years was at an airport. They had signs posted at the entrance of each one, asking people to stay on the right, if they weren't walking, and to keep the right side clear for people who walked.

I can see there not being an issue if an escalator is in a mall or department store. But when it comes to catching trains or planes, though some people have plenty of time, a LOT of people don't.
