View Full Version : When Will JustJon Sell Off His Share of RFnet?
We're all painfully aware that JustJon has zero interest in this web site anymore; not only does he rarely (if ever) post here, but he hasn't even logged on in over a week.
It's not like there's something preventing him from doing so, as he still Twitters every 3 minutes.
I figure it's only fair he sells the board to a real fan, not someone who just looks at it as a business opportunity and then abandons it for the latest fad.
Who do you think would be a good replacement?

why should he sell it? maybe in a year he decides to refocus on it. I am sure he still does a lot of backend stuff we all don't know about it.
I have no idea if he makes money on it, but if he did that is even less reason to sell. That was a smart investment that brings in cash, why sell it off?

Really?
You don't think an owner should have an interest in his business?
Have you ever seen a professional sports team that gets bought by someone who looks at it as a business and has little interest in the product on the field?

Why come here and deal with all this bullshit of the drama. That's part of the responsibility of ownership - catering to your customers.
If the product you're selling suffers, the customers go away.
The owner doesn't abandon a franchise and have it thrive.

All of you with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mind set remind me of the American auto industry.

I think if you're not constantly growing, adapting, and improving your product is going to suffer.
That's all I'm saying.
I find it mind boggling that some of you think it's perfectly acceptable for someone to own a business (no matter how small or insignificant it may be) which they have zero interest in.

What business is it of yours to decide what is acceptable when it comes to who owns this site?
Seriously, it would be one thing if the site ran poorly or didn't work, but when all is said and done it's been designed to run fine. It serves its purpose. Sure, some things could be upgraded like the chat room, but the essential parts all run smoothly most of them time.

There are no real problems that affect posting here at the site, so really as long as he is available if the site needs him that is all we need. Things like the chatroom...... those are secondary problems and they are not urgent. Im sure he will deal with them in due time. All other issues can be handled by mikeyboy et al.

BTW none of the big three are owned by anyone who has remotely the power that just john does here. they are run by stock holders and board members who appoint people to run the company for them.
By your logic, a family business should be sold to the next generation as opposed to handed down and kicking back up to the older generation who put in the work to get it off the ground and lay the foundation?
Also, JJ did move this site from 1.1 to 2.0 which was a huge transition in a lot of different ways. he put a shitton of work into that. i mean i love mikeyboy as much as anyone on here, but no other admin on this site could have done what JJ did for this board in terms of getting it up and running. I am sure mikey would agree with that

You can't compare this site to an auto company. You can compare a corner store to an auto company. But you CANNOT compare this site to a corporation. For starters, Jon does not make a profit! It is like comparing the Rotary Club to a Shop Rite. And the guy who pays for the meeting place of the club never shows up to the meetings because he is too busy doing more important things.
I cant imagine Jon ever thought of making money when he first joined up with Jeff/Carter. And because of that, RonFez.net is NOT a business! It may be incorporated but that is simply for tax/legal reasons.
Have you ever heard of a silent partner? "A silent partner is one who still shares in the profits and losses of the business, but who is uninvolved in its management, and/or whose association with the business is not publicly known." Now granted Jon is a little more visible than that, but I cant blame him for taking a step back. If he didnt have a username on the site and just handled the back end of things, this thread would never exist!!

You analogy of using the auto industry is still seriously flawed no matter the set up. If you want to compare business models to justify your opinion at least use something remotely similar such as IGN.
Also, using the replies in this tread it is obvious that there is GVAC fatigue pertaining to similar subjects in the past.

I'm glad Gvac cares about my personal well being. I've been going thru a lot of personal shit over the last couple months, nothing I'm going to post here, but I did post it in the staff room, so they are aware of what I'm going thru.
I have been checking in on the site, keeping everything running, paying the bills, etc. that it takes to keep the site running, but have asked others to handle the day to day management in my place.
If you had any questions about my well being, you could have easily emailed or IMed me and asked, but that's not your M.O. You need to post publicly and try to cause trouble instead of talking to me privately. So keep stirring shit and promoting whatever agenda you may have, but leave me out of it.

Yes, you posted that there, but then later on you compare the site to the American auto industry or a major league sports team.
You can't blame people for being stupid, when its your posts that conflict with each other.
And the fact is that different businesses require different levels of attention to the business, especially if you have people to whom to delegate oversight. A car business has multiple competitors, has multiple models of cars that have to be developed every year for different types of buyers (rich, middle class, etc), has to deal with thousands of employees and unions, and has to be continously innovating. A messageboard is a different business model.

this will only mean something to people who first got to drive their cars around paramus in the late 90's, but that kind of not caring from an owner is what turned places like sportsworld and speedway17 into unmaintained shitholes that deserved the demolition they eventually received.

You said it was mind boggling to you how many people find the way the board is run perfectly acceptable, implying that anyone thinking along those lines is in the wrong. With that single statement you decreed what you thought was acceptable and anyone thinking otherwise was "mind boggling" to you.
Besides, why does the owner have to sell the site if they simply don't want to post or lurk on a regular basis? Jon has never made himself unavailable if needed. He's easily found on IM. He can always be e-mailed with board needs and responds quickly. Just because he's not logged in doesn't mean he's seperated from the board.
The owner of the site doesn't have to be an active member on it. This is not saying that your ideas of how a board should be run by its owners aren't valid...I'm just saying that it's not necessarily a bad thing if our owner isn't a regular member so long as he can be easily reached.

The problem is he doesnt make any money off of this site. And I cant imagine there is much he can do to improve that. So I imagine he is off doing things to help keep his bank account in the black instead of posting here.
There are no real problems that affect posting here at the site, so really as long as he is available if the site needs him that is all we need. Things like the chatroom...... those are secondary problems and they are not urgent. Im sure he will deal with them in due time. All other issues can be handled by mikeyboy et al.
im not speaking for jon or the site, but that is the way i see things

Yes, you posted that there, but then later on you compare the site to the American auto industry or a major league sports team.
You can't blame people for being stupid, when its your posts that conflict with each other.
And the fact is that different businesses require different levels of attention to the business, especially if you have people to whom to delegate oversight. A car business has multiple competitors, has multiple models of cars that have to be developed every year for different types of buyers (rich, middle class, etc), has to deal with thousands of employees and unions, and has to be continously innovating. A messageboard is a different business model.
HOLY FUCK.
Are you all so stupid that you can't understand his comparison and what level it was made. It was simply to say ronfez.net is stagnant just like the auto industry and it needs an owner or ownership group who is not only involved but gives two fucks. It's actually pretty simple.

And it's a ridiculous analogy. The board isn't "stagnant." It doesn't need to constantly evolve. It's a fucking message board for a radio show. It works fine. Boom, great. It's not failing like the auto industry. Is it perfect? Of course not. Stuff like the chat room could be upgraded, but even that is inconsequential to the main functions of the message board which work just fine.

As Jon said, the board is running fine. The staff is taking care of business. There are no problems as far as the site is concerned.
JJ can easily be reached by any number of methods. AIM, Google, Twitter
Or even a simple phone call or text.
I love the great leap that was taken.:wallbash:
Jon has some personal stuff going on, therefor he must sell out. What the fuck, bro?
Take a few minutes and gather the facts before starting another baseless crusade. I know you have his number.
It's easy. Let me walk you through it.
"Hey Jon, you haven't been around much lately. Is everything O.K?"
Now I will let you jump on me for toeing the company line, and following orders, blah blah blah.
Talk about negativity.
You know what Hottub, fuck that bullshit you just wrote. Justjon used the same bullshit excuse when he banned me for saying twitter sucked. Also, if it was such an issue, which we all have in our lives, it sure didn't hurt his twittering.

People saying this board is dying, not growing, blah blah blah, but I never see their awesome ideas to turn this into the next Google or some shit.

Lord knows I've taken my shots at Jon over the years, but harping on the Twitter thing like it's somehow detrimental to the board is beyond redundant at this point. Again, he can be easily reached through e-mail and IM, same as if he was logging on to the board more often. If there was an actual problem that was detrimental to the board being able to run we can contact him the same as before (plus some of the staff can call him if need be). The Twitter stuff is meaningless. He doesn't have to be here a set amount of time.

East Haven is nice, but only when compared to West Haven.
Their school mascot is still pretty cool though (a mean blue and yellow bee.)
My favorite East Haven moment - meeting Chico Resch.

What business is it of yours to decide what is acceptable when it comes to who owns this site?
Seriously, it would be one thing if the site ran poorly or didn't work, but when all is said and done it's been designed to run fine. It serves its purpose. Sure, some things could be upgraded like the chat room, but the essential parts all run smoothly most of them time.
sounds plenty flawed and ignored for a long time to me... most of the time is not really acceptable
I don't care if Jon signs on or not as the (or one of the) owner(s) here... or even posts... but if things get brought up over and over by the members posting... wouldn't it be in his best interest to work on having it fixed or made better? After all, it is like a virtual business card with his name all over it... and it's not looking too good when you look at it closer.

So keep stirring shit and promoting whatever agenda you may have, but leave me out of it.
good luck dealing with your personal things! Do what you gotta do, life should always come before a radio fansite/messageboard

I said "most of the time" as a caveat to the slowdowns when we have to access the control panel, particuarly to do IP checks. That's a basically a "necessary evil" given the template that the board uses. You essentially have to make some choices: the site doesn't generate very much money so you have to go with a model that both works on a regular basis and is affordable. In those terms I think the site works very well. You have the slowdowns that lock things up for a few minutes, but is that really a serious problem? It's not like the site is going down for sustained periods of times. For a free message board of this size that allows all of the photos, .gifs. videos and so-on that it does it runs very well.
The other recognizable "problem" is the chat room, but that's due to the setup by service that hosts the chat room, not anything we actually have here. We're exploring cost-effective replacements and it's there in the meantime (and despite the hype it's not giving people's compurters viruses) as the non-essential option that it's always been.
None of that is ignored: it's fully recognized as being the best option right now given the cost of the site. New owners aren't going to want to invest more money and time (that latter only if they can do the the tech stuff themselves. If not, they have to pay other people to do it, which just ups the costs even more) into a free website that isn't going to turn that money around, which is the key point. Free message boards of this size have a ceiling as to how "perfectly" they can run. Unless we REALLY bomb the place with ads and install things like pop-ups and start selling e-mail addresses and so on, you have to work with the money available.

Mojo is correct, most of those vbulletin chats are nothing more then an integrated client connecting to an outside service. Most of them really suck a lot. (look at the STI chatbox. That's how most of them are) I have never really seen a good vbull chat. Most are slow featureless and relay traffic from where ever they are connecting to back to the board causing inflated guess counts sometimes into the 1000's. Not really guests, just relayed traffic.

Exactly, and Vbull is notorious for being one of the hardest to work with and have the steepest learning curve.
People make livings doing Vbulletin maintenance
http://www.installvbulletin.info/professional-vbulletin-services/vbulletin-maintenance-services/
$50.00 a month they ask to maintain and run Vbulletin for you.
Then there are people who make livings doing custom work for Vbulletin messageboards
http://www.minerskinz.com/service.html
$250 - $1000 for a custom design.
These are just two sites but there are plenty of them out there. Running, maintaining, and fixing this shit isn't a cake walk.

Exactly install a hack like Ispy for example then install a chat hack and a blog hack next thing you know the Ispy hack gets a update but the updated Ispy hack isn't compatible with the chat hack or the blog hack. I'd love to see any of the people that constantly complain give the webmaster thing a shot it would be interesting to watch.

I doubt most would even be able to get past installing vbull itself. I've installed, and played with all the major ones, Vbull, SMF (the best) phpbb etc. Vbulletin easily has the roughest install process out of all of them.
