View Full Version : Best One-Album Band of All Time?

While blipping a couple of songs by The La's today, Mooch asked if they were the best one-album band of all time. I can't really disagree with that sentiment, but I'm sure a few other people have different ideas.

I don't think there is any one album band close to the Sex Pistols.

Wow, how did I forget about them? I guess with all of the other compilations, live discs, demos, and the movie soundtrack I didn't even consider them a one-album band.

Jeff Buckley's gotta be up there with Grace.
I wish the Stone Roses counted. In my mind they do.

Isn't that also cheating since it's basically just an MF Doom album produced by Madlib? You could put up the Viktor Vaughn or the Adult Swim album he did by those standards.

Derek and the Dominoes is the obvious answer, but don't discount David & David. I still listen to Boomtown.

I don't think so if it's an MC doing an entire album with one producer. I don't think of Gnarls Barkley as a Cee-Lo solo album that just happened to be produced by Danger Mouse...it's a musical collaboration. Same with MF Doom when doing these side projects with a single producer. I would count Danger Doom on the list too, but not Victor Vaughn, since that had more than one producer.

I would say yes because they didn't get together again after the fact.

First of all thanks for being a complete douchebag. I thought you were talking about studio albums and not counting live albums and the rest. I assume this because the La's have 5 other CDs out including compilations and a live BBC sessions CD.
But it was my mistake. I thought you knew what you were talking about.

Good one, but a little too forced. I'd pick the Deltron 3030 album instead.

The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers
Jonathan did go on to release other 'modern lovers' records. I'm with you in not counting those releases. I'd pick this too.
I'm also adding Essential Logic to this list. One studio album, and a handful of 7' singles. Does that disqualify them?

Does Sublime count?
Officially they had three, Sublime, live album, and a post mortem album.

There's no rules. It was just a discussion that was being held somewhere, with the La's being the topic. I just thought I'd bring it here and see what others have to say.
For me personally, I'd throw out Derek and the Dominos, Blind Faith, and the various Seattle collaborations. I was thinking more in lines of a band that comes out of nowhere and releases one album before disappearing. The "super groups" of the early 70's and 90's certainly had their own pedigrees coming into the project. And I'd still give the nod to the La's over the Pistols because both Johnny and Steve carried on with other projects to varied success. The La's virtually disappeared forever until reuniting for some shows over the last couple of yeaers.
But that's just my personal definition, and every choice mentioned in this thread has merit.

I thought of the Spex but it turns out they reunited in the 90's to record a new album. Total bummer - should have stayed gone.
