I saw it and enjoyed it very much.
A romantic dramedy about obsessive love that is full of quirky inventive twists on the old formula.
Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Goren-Levitt have a terrific chemistry and do some of their best work ever.
During this crappy summer it's nice to have a nice surprise.
It won't be out for a month or so,
so you have something to look forward to.

I've never been a big guy about merging threads but people always give me crap about it.
But yes....I think this is one of the best films of the year so far.

Someone in the hot chick thread loves her. I forget who though.

I just heard about this movie today, looks fun and different. Can't wait to see it.

I didn't like this that much. If a love story - sorry, a story about love  - doesn't make me walk out mourning the fact that the attractive two leads didn't make it as a couple then it's not worth its salt for me. Conversely, if love conquers all in a good movie with this kind of content, I should have the desire to dance in the lobby with a top hat and cane afterward.

All this film really accomplished was making me fully aware of Zooey Deschanel's limitations as a performer. There's some moments here that would've benefitted from somebody in the girlfriend role displaying a modicum of range. All she seems capable of doing is being an adorable pixie with robotically deadpan dialogue delivery. She basically just plays herself in every movie, I realize that now in hindsight. I'm no longer content with seeing her in films just because she's easy on the eyes. She's usurping roles that more talented actresses could be making a name for themselves with.

I'm a traditionalist when it comes to romantic movies. The formula works as long as the chemistry is there and the story is well told. They tried to fix what wasn't broken here with the cutesy artistic touches designed to enchance indie cred and the jumbled narrative approach where key events from the titular span are randomly assembled. Putting the story on shuffle was ultimately pointless since the beginning, middle and end ultimately mirrored the cycle of the relationship, only with a few throwaway details rearranged.

File this one under "sizeable disappointment" for me.

I was blown away.

There was a line that went something like 'Tom had wondered if anyone had ever gotten this far with her' when he and Summer were talking about her dreams or past experiences.

It wasn't meant sexually, it was referring to wondering if anyone had ever gotten to know her on this deep a level. I thought it was the most true romantic thing I've ever heard in a movie.

I'll post more later.

Nice. If there's one thing hammersavage doesn't hammersavage, it's his movie picks.

I'll be seeing this movie.

Just got back from seeing it. I thought the beginning came on a bit strong with the hipster factor of both characters but once that settled down i really enjoyed the story.

I was never a Zooey Deschanel fan so i guess it won't be surprising when i saw that she is a very 1 dimensional actress. She's the same version of, what is essentially herself, in every movie i see her in. It seems like all she is capable of is wearing retro clothes and being ambivalent to everyone around her.

Love JGL though, i am glad that his acting presence is being noticed and sought after.

Couldn't agree more. I enjoyed the movie. Loved the look of it, the script, the soundtrack...JGL does a great job, so does most of the rest of the cast, but Zooey is just there. That's all she is. There's nothing exceptional or even all that interesting about her. She doesn't kill the film because she seems like she'd be perfectly tolerable enough, but the role really asked for someone who has an actual presence and appeal to them besides "cute, blase hipster" chick. I'd give the film a B or B+ instead of a solid A because of her.

Which is ironic because of the entire segment about the character of "Summer" who essentially is the "It" girl to everyone she comes into contact with, despite being perfectly average in every way. Deschanel doesn't fit the mold because there is nothing even remotely striking about her, except her eyes which wouldn't be anything if she weren't as pale as death.

The character called for someone who filled that invisible space that typically exists around every day people's personalities. I don't know if i can even think of an actress off the top of my head that would have been better for the role but the presence that i feel should have existed here is akin to the one Kate Hudson had in Almost Famous.

I enjoyed this very much. I'm also glad I got to see it at an AMC since the sound in their theaters are top notch and I got to hear the Hall and Oates song in full glory (great part of the movie btw, I downloaded their entire discog). I also loved the uncomfortable awkwardness of their first interactions, it was great. Each emotion was clearly expressed, this is a great movie. I fucking hate chick flicks, this is not a chick flick.

I could see Anne Hathaway pull it off if she had less of a career.

Here are the movies i've seen her in:

Elf- odd, slightly disgruntled Christmas Elf helper.
Almost Famous- 60's hippie, free spirit.
The New Guy- kooky best buddy
Hitchhiker's Guide- ambivalent character in general.
Failure to Launch- wacky best friend
The Assassination of...- Don't even remember her being in it.

all in all she pretty much sucks.

She was amaaazzzing in The Happening.

Seriously, rent Winter Passing. She is fantastic in it.

But I don't even think she is a good actress. She's fine. But she has a je ne sais quoi about her. I'd say the same for Scarlett Johanssen. Don't think she's a great actress, she's fine. But I think she's a movie star and an it girl.

Jesse James?

I loved that movie and I don't recall her being in it either... wait... I think she was at the end? Robert Ford's wife? That was a very, very small role. She probably wasn't on screen for 5 minutes.

Anyway, I love Zooey and could watch her read the phone book.

that was she. she had a slightly bigger part but it was already almost 3 hours so she's barely in it.

And that's the problem when they're in a role that requires them to play an actual character.

Well I think she played a character a few times. Look, she'll never win an Oscar, but you if are casting a girl who completely pulls you in by how cute she is but at the end you realize she has flaws which is exactly how the story played out, she makes perfect sense. I think that's exactly how I would describe her. She's beautiful, she has a great voice, she's a competent actor.

She also was pretty good in The Good Girl. I'd say she really acted about 5 times.

Eh, I just don't see that here. This was a role that required someone who could seem truly special to someone enamored with EVERYTHING about her, and she just doesn't have that. It's all superficial and trendy with her.

I see your gripe. If you didn't love her going in, he performance would do nothing to sway you. But if you did love her going in, then you bought the way Tom felt from the second he went on screen. I guess that's a bad job, it coulda been more.

Yeah, that's a good way of putting it. I can pretty much buy any actor in any role so long as they can pull it off.
