As one of the smarter posters on this board once said, 'man, those were the days'.
Believe or not, the network used to show videos. And some of them were great. Others were so bad, they were great.
From VJ contests, Beavis and Butthead, Remote Control (even with their shotty contestant screening), Headbangers Ball, even TRL. The network revolved around music and music videos.
What was your most memorable video or music related moment? For some of the older members, what was it like when MTV first premiered?
I really enjoyed the original Unplugged series. I still listen to the Nirvana session and the Pearl Jam session helped to add to their legend.
Also, the 25 Lamest video countdown that was brought up before was hilarious and I'm rewatching most of it on youtube now.
So what you got?

The landmark moment was the frog baseball episode. That was quite the conversation the next day at school.
And its gone to such shit now (that yes, I sometimes still watch). But you could watch proudly back then.
It really seemed like an entire era was raised on the network, you never see that kind of collective viewing for anything today.

The first time I ever saw MTV was at a friend's house sometime around 1983 or 84. I saw Talking Heads doing Burning Down the House. My buddy said his older sister thought it was an abomination that would result in hundreds of kids trying to burn down their homes.
It was at a friend's house, because my dad was too cheap to get cable. My only video outlet was...

"I want my mtv".
When it came out this was the slogan to get cable outlets to carry the channel.
Back then me & my friends partied alot. This was the channel the tv stayed on mostly from what I remember.
I was a huge Remote Control fan & would like to see some of those old shows even now.
Some big comics were on Colin Quinn, Adam Sandler to name a few.

I used to love grabbing a couple of six packs and getting together with my friends to watch the new episodes. Hard to believe it premiered over 15 years ago.
Like you said, it still gives me a laugh, especially their commentaries on videos. Watching them watch Janet Jackson's You Want This in the episode Another Friday Night still brings tears of laughter.
The only show I liked on MTv was 120 Minutes.

Yes! That was one of my memories. I was raised on MTV because I had a cousin living with us who was a teenager in the early 80s so that and the radio were on constantly. I remember them showing the same videos over and over because there weren't that many back then. I vividly remember Money for Nothing by Dire Straits and Touch of Grey by Grateful Dead being played alot. I loved the early Real World and Road Rules.

Late 80's Headbangers Ball used to be GREAT. Where else could you see vids by Megadeth, Slayer, Overkill, Anthrax, etc... Not to mention the theme song was old footage of train wrecks and shit set to S.O.D.
Great stuff.

Liquid TV both entranced and scared the fuck out of me.
I watched Beavis & Butthead with my brothers but hated when they made fun of Daria because her name rhymes with mine.
I remember watching Soul Asylum's "Runaway Train" video on our big screen TV (which took up the space of a small car) in our living room.
I loved MTV.

I so loved that show. VH1 Classic was airing what they were calling 120 Minutes a while back, but it sucked. It was just the best known videos that got played on that show and some of the in-studio performances. I wish they would just air the old episodes in their entirety.

Tons of great shows already mentioned, but I think the thing that really shifted the change for me was when they stopped running all the weird commercials that were like little comedy bits and cartoons unto themselves. MTV2 has started showing some kind of throwback block late at nights where they show Ren & Stimpy and The State and 90's videos and cartoons and all the weird shorts and commercials.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FqGJVieT464&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FqGJVieT464&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I think the last original series MTV put out that really was akin to "classic MTV" was The Sifl and Olly Show. I think it's ironic that shows like S&O and B&B had to find time to play videos during the episode. That kind of thing would never be expected now.
