Morning People And Night Owls Show Different Brain Function (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/06/090623150621.htm)

Using magnetic resonance imaging-guided brain stimulation, scientists tested muscle torque and the excitability of pathways through the spinal cord and brain. They found that morning people's brains were most excitable at 9 a.m. This slowly decreased through the day. It was the polar opposite for evening people, whose brains were most excitable at 9 p.m.

Other major findings:

Evening people became physically stronger throughout the day, but the maximum amount of force morning people could produce remained the same.

The excitability of reflex pathways that travel through the spinal cord increased over the day for both groups.

These findings show that nervous-system functions are different and have implications for maximizing human performance.

I'm feel I'm a night owl, as I'm always wide awake when I should be sleeping around midnight during the weekdays. But lately I've been getting up at 6am to excersise and I enjoy the early morning, quiet hour. It's only been a month and I'm sure I'll get more use to it, but I gotta go with Night Owl.

I work nights. I feel that scientifically I am smarter and stronger than anyone who is not me.

I can be either depending on the day.

I mostly work second shift and I stay up all night when I get home. Starting next week I have to work at 6am for two months. The first week always sucks. I'm gonna be beat.

College: Night Owl

Now: Morning Person (only in the sense that I go into work early)

Fuck it, I'm putting myself down as a Morning Person. Lately (mostly because of all that's going on in my life) my sleep schedule is so messed up I wake up at 5AM on Saturdays and Sundays..

I've always been more of a night owl.

If it wasn't for work, I wouldn't be waking up at ongodly hours.

I get more stuff done when I wake up early though, so I have to force myself too, but it isn't my natural inclination.

If it was up to me I'd get up everyday around noon, work from 2pm-10pm, come home and relax, fall asleep around 4am

Yeah that sounds like my utopia as well.

Ideally, I'd work the 1-9 shift, which I might be doing (hopefully) in the near future. But then I'll have to take early classes, so either way I'm getting my ass outta bed early, albeit temporarily. :annoyed:

Morning person.

For the weekdays I get up at 5:30am for work and I try to get to bed by 9pm. When my alarm goes off I am out of bed in seconds and warming up the shower as fast as possible, I've never used a snooze button, when the bell goes off I am up.

The morning can kiss my ass! But of course I married a morning person. I obviously had to change my schedule when I got a 8 - 5 job but I still sleep in on weekends and stay up late Friday and Saturday.

Night owl definately. I feel more inclined to do things later at night rather than during the day. I love nighttime!

I'm a night owl that wishes the alarm clock didn't go off at 6 am six days a week.

i'm a night owl. i despise the mornings. even more now that my schedule went from working overnights to being in at 9. i fucking hate waking up in the morning. the birds that start singing at 4:30 in the morning can suck my balls.

I'm not sure if I fall under either. I picked "morning person" because even though my body wants to stay up late and hates being up early, I'm definitely at my sharpest mentally earlier in the day. As the day wears on, no dice.

This is so weird that you posted this today, Furtherman. Just this morning while I was drinking my coffee at 5:40 AM I thought to myself "After all these years I'm STILL not used to getting up this early. I hate it."

I'm definitely a night owl. I hate going to bed early and even when I come home exhausted I get a second wind around 10PM.

I wish my working hours were noon to 9 PM.

used to be a night person, never went to sleep earlier than 11 during the week and 3-4am on the weekend.

now i am up at the crack of dawn on a daily basis. it's actually nice doing things like walking my dogs and eating breakfast when no ones around. Even moreso now that it is light out earlier in the morning. 11 is now basically the latest i can physically stay up. I feel like an old man.

Tell me about it. Getting home from late shifts are so horrible health-wise because it's so hard to get to sleep plus you're hungry from having been working.

I have nothing to do with it.

I am a morning person, it doesn't matter the day of the week. If I'm in bed past 6 o'clock I've slept in. If I'm up past 9:30, I'm up late.

The only thing good about mornings is coffee. I can't stand how morning people brag about how early the wake up/get to work/etc... you do see us night owls bragging about staying up til 2 am and getting 4 hrs of sleep before we have to drag ourselves in to work.

Both, neither. I guess I am more of a night owl but have been both and I do start working before 7 AM most days.
