its Jordan because people didn't start doing gay nicknames like JLo until the 90's.

michael jackson had his own video game.
jordan mightve been a character in video games, but he doesnt have a game based solely on him
so from a gamers point of view mj = jackson

though ive used MJ a few posts ago to refer to michael jackson in the dead thread, i usually automatically think of Jordan as MJ.
actually, i dont really call michael jackson anything other than Michael Jackson. i have a hard time refering to him as a "man" or a "he". he was always "Michael Jackson", his own category of being, gender neutral, if you will.

or a bigger athlete than Jordan. You saw that Simmons article. Jordan OWNED everywhere he went. Worldwide. As much as Jackson, and then Jordan never ruined it like Jackson.

I would say his GM job has ruined it (sarcasm).
it's really close but I think Jackson was bigger at his biggest regardless of a ruined legacy.

I was looking at their net worth from various sources. Jackson probably made more, but it was no slam dunk. However Jackson blew through so much of it that it's pretty clear that Jordan currently has more than jackson had at the time of his death.

You are all crazy. Jackson was big for a decade before Jordan came along and was still one of the biggest and wackist personalities WORLDWIDE until he died. I know Jordan was known throughout the world but Jackson was beloved for decades not only in the U.S. but throughout the world. He set musical and popular trends that were way above putting his name on some poorly made sneakers.

In terms of the specific nickname "MJ," it's Jordan all the way. I rarely heard Jackson called that whereas it was used constantly with Jordan.
In terms of which was the bigger global icon, that's tougher. It's hard to argue that there's ever been two bigger global pop culture icons along the line of recognition seemingly everywhere. Maybe the Beatles. Maybe.

I kind of doubt that. He'll see a big spike because of his death, but long term his weirdness and the kid-touching allegations hurt his legacy a lot. Plus, the music industry isn't what it once was. Catalog titles don't sell nearly as well as they would have 15 years ago.

I dont think so. I think it is the effort to get European and Asian players into the NBA that accounts for current popularity. The whole dream team should take credit for starting the worldwide interest...Certainly not just Jordan.
Musical acts cross cultures way more than athletes do.

Michael Jackson is the bigger celebrity, but MJ is and always was Jordan. That was his fucking nickname. People started calling Jackson that afterwards.
And Mikeyboy thank you for posting Jordan vs. Bird, when I first read that post I thought to myself "Please tell me Im not the only person that remembers that game!"

if MJ (Michael Jordan) suddenly died yesterday there would be nowhere near as much media attention as this has generated. I love Jordan bur the deceased is a bonafied pedo, yet still Jordan's got's nothin on Jackson.
I couldn't give two shits about Jacko yesterday but I'm torn about the loss to the degree I don't care the man diddled little boys. That's how huge Jackson was.

No. ESPN has been a major media outlet for almost 20 years now.
