More often than not it's been the most segregated major American city in the US.

I think Boston gets the worst rap for just out and out racism. The Chicago city planners have gone out of their way over its history to keep the city strictly divided according to racial demographics. There is simply relatively very little social interaction interaction between whites in blacks for a city of this size and because of this the black neighborhoods have always been poor. Poor = more crime.

Chicago is a highly segregated large (major) city. Boston is a highly segregated small (major) city. :drunk:
Bostonians aren't necessarily racist, they just tend to live in very homogeneous neighborhoods that don't take kindly to new people moving in (especially if they tend to watch soccer or wear hats sideways.)

It's actually not due to the size of the cities. In most of the studies that rank these things Boston is almost never in the top 10 of most segregated major American cities. Chicago was the on and off king for about a century, but in the last couple of decades they've falling down towards the bottom of the top 10's. Fear not! It seems other midwest cities have sprung to keep the title out here...rock on, Detroit, Milwuakee, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Cleveland. NYC and Buffalo are usually in the top 10, as are Philly and Newark.

I can confirm both Dallas locations as awful places to be... East side of Dallas is just flat out a terrible place to live.
I also can confirm that area of Miami is horrible as well... it is about five blocks from the Orange Bowl...
I am suprised Cleveland wasnt on the list higher... there arent many scarier places in the US than the Cleveland Hood... and where is LA? How about the mexican gang cartel area south of San Diego outside of TJ?

A big part of the reason there is so much crime in Chicago is also cause no one is allowed to own guns. All the guys with illegal guns know 100% a citizen does not have one.

Yeah, it's not like there was a problem with violent crime in Chicago before the gun reforms.
OHHHHHHHH, SORRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEE.
Besides, the homicide rates don't really show any kind of spike in connection to the gun laws:
1990: 851
1991: 927
1992: 943
1993: 931

According to this CNN article Chicago's gun ban law went into effect in 1982
Chicago’s law, which has been in effect since 1982, allows ownership of rifles, but they must be registered every year with the police. Concealed weapons, semi-automatic and automatic weapons aren’t allowed. There are some exceptions for members of the military and law enforcement agencies.

If the crime don't get ya the air will. My town was just listed as one of the 50 worst cities for people getting cancer just from breathing the air. And people actually move here for the fresh air! Don't think you're safe where you live, though. Even though we're in the top 50, we are barely above the National average. In other words, oxygen gives you cancer everywhere in the US.

Neighborhood #1 in Cincinnati is an area called Over-the-Rhine. It's a somewhat charming name for a truly terrifying place.

the cincinnati area is called "over-the-rhine" which accounts for over 90% of cincinnati crime. i heard about this study a while ago and i was trying to figure out how they got the numbers so that it would be number 1. I think because its just "violent crime" instead of "Murder" and the fact that every neighborhood surrounding OTR is safe means alot of people who are passing by get fucked up contributes to the number. Like, the most violent neighborhood in Detriot, the surrounding neighborhoods probably aren't too peachy either. But in cincinnati, they somehow got all the scum in one surrounding area and then flowers, sunshine and rainbows outside of that.
Just my theory

East Dallas sucks ass and scares me. I am surprised a little part of Houston around the south Gessner area did not make the list. Even more surprising is that New Orleans did not make it, that city sucks even greater ass and is a thunderdome.

17. Tampa, Fla. (Amelia Ave./Tampa St.)
Hah. Tampa Heights.
I grew up there. I hardly ever contributed to any statistics. It's actually a neighborhood on a big time upswing.

I live an hour from Orlando and that place is a goddamn zoo. Half the shit that gets started over here on the coast is these animals coming in on the weekends and bringing their shit with them.

I just got back from New Orleans this week - I had to do some visits for my job in and around every section of the city... I was SHOCKED at how much better it was now than even a year ago. It may be one of the biggest turn arounds I have seen in a downtown area in a very long time. Now I may have just got lucky - but I was REALLY shocked at how much better it felt. Bourbon Street even smelled less than I can ever remember - even after a huge rain.
If there was ever a time to give a city another try, it would be right now... not to mention I had one of the best five meals of my life at "The Commander's Palace" while I was there.

Yea, it's been about a year and a half since I've been but even pre-Katrina I would not go there unless I had business.

there's no anacostia, so this list is pretty much useless.
I don't think North Ave and Bel Air rd is even the worst area in Baltimore. I think I could come up with 25 neighborhoods that would make this list. Including some of the burbs like Woodlawn and Arbutus...

125th & Nick is bad...really bad at night, but I'd place Mott Ave in Far Rockaway higher. Even at daytime you need cops around if you don't "match" the scenery, or regardless if you're disabled or elderly. Also, many of those Manhattan clusters midtown and below correlate with public housing complexes.

Camden or (to a lesser extent) Newark didn't make the list?
I'd wear a diamond studded suit and "cabbage patch" my way down 125th and St. Nick at 3AM.

no camden and no newark ? wtf. or, are all the neighborhoods in those cities too shitty to list?
also, just out of curiousity, within all these neighborhoods listed, do each of them have a "dr martin luther king" road/drive/ave ?
it seems that shittyness attaches itself to roads named after him.
