Reason, meaning, these are all synthetic sensibilities attached to events by humans who want to learn a lesson from them or better explain how or what brought said events about. Outside of human material invention, reason and meaning have no place in nature.
Is that such a terrible idea?
No, and I agree completely.
"Things happen for a reason" is merely a different way of saying "I'm sorry you're going through a bad time but things will get better."

So God doesn't really open a window every time he shuts a door?

Wait my life isn't predetermined?!?
How did this happen?!?

Man that is a lot like what I was just thinking about a few minutes ago. I really wish there was a reason for some of the shit that goes on, but there isnt. It just happens

no, that's your wife, cause she knows about the importance of a well aired out room
I'll even go one step further and say it's just as illogical to label events in our life as "good" and "bad."
Someone close to you dies, you get a flat tire, and you break up with your chick and everyone says "he's going through a bad time."
No, normal every day occurrences are happening.
Maybe one of the things you thought was "bad" actually wasn't. Maybe because you broke up with your chick you find an even better one.
We humans are incredibly egotistic.

So youre saying you broke up with this chick for a reason?
So youre saying you broke up with this chick for a reason?
Of course there was a reason for the break up, but maybe the ultimate outcome changes the experience from "bad" to "good."
everything happens for a reason; something happens, and causes something else to happen, even by not happening something has happened. our lives and experiences are all waves crashing on rocks, dominoes falling, rocks in space being pulled into the atmosphere. we need to go back in time and find that first action to ever happen, that first thing to push the first domino, and stop it from happening. all will be ok.

I know what you meant, but it sounds like you were implying that by breaking up with that girl, you ended up finding another girl who was just as good/better. Like the two were connected somehow which I think contradicts the rest of your post

I didn't say that there was a reason, just that labeling an event "good" or "bad" without knowing the ultimate outcome is just as silly as thinking it happened for a reason.

Reading "The Secret" will make you think about the hows and whys good or bad things happen

Why does a dog perform a trick? Because it's made the determination that if it does perform
it, it will get a biscuit as a reward.
This isn't instinctual, like an animal eating because it's hungry...it's deduced the reasoning behind it in its mind.
Reason exists in nature, it's just more primitive.
Now if you're talking about divine reason and meaning, I agree...those are human constructs. But reason and meaning do exist. We live in life timeline (what time is, is another discussion...), in which events happen that put us in different places along that progression. Reason and meaning is WHY we get to point B from point A. It's both subjective and objective. The former because it's open to one's perception, the latter because a reason finitely exists even if we don't agree on what it is...simple cause and effect.

Yeah, but the reason and meaning I refer to is not the same as cause and effect found in nature, such as hand touch fire, fire burn hand, hand hurt. yes you can use the word reason in explaining why fire hurt hand, but that's not a synthetic construct attached to something to give it extra value amongst one race of animals. it just hurts, and thus is.

I figured it out
I was high and low and everything in between
I was wicked and wild, baby, you know what I mean
Till there was you, yeah, you
Something went wrong
I made a deal with the devil for an empty I.O.U.
Been to hell and back, but an angel was looking through
It was you, yeah, you
It's all because of you
You are the reason
You are the reason I wake up every day
And sleep through the night
You are the reason, the reason
In the middle of the night
I'm going down 'cause I adore you
I want to floor you
I'm giving it up
No more running around spinning my wheel
You came out of my dream and you made it real
I know what I feel
It's you
It's all because of you
You are the reason
You are the reason I wake up every day
And sleep through the night
You are the reason, the reason
In the middle of the night
I'm going down 'cause I want you
I want to touch you
I want to floor you
You are the reason, baby
You are the reason
You are the reason I wake up every day
And sleep through the night
You are the reason, the reason
