Anime: Are Fansubs wrong?

I hope I'm not the only hardcore anime fan on the board, because this thread will just be useless.

Is fansubbing piracy, or a good way to get anime cheap?

I just got into buying fansubs a few months ago and it's great! I payed $6 in comparison to the $20 I used to pay for other anime.

The only pluses I can think about with buying anime from a store is that you can be sure that the subtitles are translated right.

They are most definitely NOT wrong!

Well....maybe they are. It could be considered piracy by some people.

But c'mon! You've been to an anime shop, I'm assuming. The prices there are insane. I wouldn't have half of my anime collection if it wasn't for cheaply priced fansubs. So, IMO, they're a GOOD thing.

fansubs are perfectly legal if the anime isn't available in america. Once the rights are picked up, they cannot distribute fansubs any more. I download a bunch of fansubs off the internet. Like the Kenshin OVA that came out last month in Japan and the Cowboy Bebop movie.

Yeah, I know about how fansubs work. But the problem Anime companies have is that with digital technology, there is an exponential increase in the number of fansubs that are distributed. So in the past, the people who couldn't find fansubs had to buy the real deal, but now many more people are potential "thieves."
