Children of Earth - 5 parter starting monday on BBC 1 - I'm sure there will be a torrential downpour that night...

Torchwood: Children of Earth comes to BBC America tonight. I'm hoping my carrier has BBC America HD, but we'll see.

I finally finished Children of Earth, and I have mixed feelings about it. Overall, I really liked it, but the children angle really hit me in the gut. I mean with 30 minutes left in the show, there is no sign of hope at all. Harkness has given up, and no one has any idea of how to defeat the aliens.

Then you have the developments with Frobisher in the last hour and the sacrifice needed to defeat the 456, it really has bothered me.

I mean an innocent, unwilling child is essentially killed to stop the 456? I get that the development leads Harkness feeling like a damned man, but come on.

But there were a lot of good things about the mini-series and it was suspenseful.

I had this on my dvr for months and just watched it this past week. My wife was very shaken up by the ending. Is this the end of Torchwood? I watched that Inside The Hub Special and got all caught up as to how Torchwood began. I got BBC America last year when I switched my cable to Verizon so I never watched DrWho. I started watching Torchwood at the begining of the 2nd season by istake and really got into it. Show I go back and watch Dr Who? How amny seasons are relevant to Torchwood? I'd be sad if the show was over. Even watching all the regulars die again in reruns makes me sad. I guess Gwen, Jack and maybe that Bridget girl from Children of Earth could reform it?

The whole thing shook me up. Just the danger to the kid aspect and I really didn't like the "sacrifice" that Jack made.

For your other questions, you really don't have to watch Dr. Who for Torchwood. Jack is introduced in the first season of hte most recent series (the one with Christopher Eccelston). He didn't appear in the second season, but the second season shows the origin of Torchwood, but it's not the same Torchwood members seen in the series. Season three of Dr. Who had Jack near the end of the season, and there are references to Torchwood at the end.

I'd recommend watching Dr. Who even without the Torchwood connection.

As for the future of Torchwood, I'm not sure it will come back.

Is Dr Who on BBC America right now? Can I jump right in or should I go back and watch older seasons? How many seasons are there? Do you think Jack will jump into Dr Who since Torchwood appears to be done?

Right now, Dr. Who is only being featured in television movies, until the new Doctor comes in. Then they will start a new season.

The man who ran Dr. Who and Torchwood is leaving Dr. Who to do other stuff. The new runner of Dr. Who has written some great Dr. Who eps, so I don't expect the quality to lessen. But because the showrunner changes, I don't know if Jack will appear on Dr. Who.

It's definitely possible since he's now in space again.

When Jack frist appeared on Dr Who he was an unlikeable douche? Did you hate him at first?

I didn't think he was an unlikeable douche. He was sort of like how Han Solo was when you first met him in Star Wars.

Actually, I liked the eps he first appeared in. And when I think of them, I remembered that the new Dr. Showrunner, Stephen Moffat, was the one to write those eps. So maybe Jack will appear in the next season of Dr. Who. It would explain why Jack is now in space. Some of the best Dr. Who eps of the last four years were written by this guy.

Looks like there is a possibility that Torchwood will have a fourth season! (http://www.tvguidemagazine.com/news/torchwood-planning-fourth-season-3168.html)

I thought it would be done for sure.

Looks like Russel Davies, the creator of Torchwood, is developing an American Torchwood series for Fox. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/43688)

I'd rather he kept making it for BBC and BBC America. There's no way he could do on Fox some of the things he did on the BBC.

Just an update on Torchwood, for those who care, the US version was canceled - thankfully - but it will be back for a fourth proper season, with 13 episodes.

I just finished up all three seasons and was surprised how much I loved this show. Better in some ways that Doctor Who, it never failed to surprise. The Children Of Earth miniseries was one of the best, and most brutal, series I've seen in a long time. Brilliant and disturbing and sad, it's just another example of how British television blows anything the US produces out of the water in terms of realism and emotion, despite the alien angle.

Can't wait for the new season next year.

Anyone watching?

Two episodes in and it's been excellent. If everyone in the world stopped dying, there would be a ton of problems. It's a parallel problem to what we have going on in our health care system right now - how do you take care of everyone? A really good American problem written in a British show.

And there is another eerie parallel example of something the writers could not have imagined, with Casey Anthony of all people.

In the show, Bill Pullman (actually doing a great job as a creep) is a admitted pedophile killer - who goes free because he did his time by the letter of the law. He was supposed to be executed, but because of the world's condition of no one dying anymore - he lives and has to be set free. But is he safer in the world?

Yes, the first three seasons were on the BBC. Torchwood is a spin-off from Doctor Who but has really come into it's own. Only two series regulars are back in this 4th season and it's made the nice transition to an American/English production.

You don't have to see the first three seasons to get this one, although I would recommend doing so, or just googling Captain Jack Harkness so you'll know what he's about, as he is central to the storyline.

I have so much tv and dont have starz so I doubt I will ever watch this. I heard the name Dr Who before, maybe here but never looked into it. What is it about?

You're unfamiliar with Doctor Who? It's been on for 50 years. Look it up - I couldn't even come close to explaining it here. Or check out the board's Doctor Who thread, we have one.

If its been around for 50 years Im guessing its a sci-fi show? Like I said in the other thread I hate sci-fi and not til recently did I even like anything similar to sci-fi. I will look it up on imdb or wiki to make sure.

This season has touched on more relevant and current topics involving us all than it ever has in the past. This past episode showed the awful truth of what could happen in a system blinded by rules and forgotten humanity.

It also was the disturbing end to a character I hated to see go - Dr. Juarez, who I was really starting to like and hoped she would become a more permanent member of the team.

And wow is Oswald turned out to be the character creep of the year. I have no idea where he is going, but he's great to watch, and hate.

I don't know what to think of this season of Torchwood, the premise is great and the new characters are really interesting, especially how great/hateable Oswald is, but it all seems very unfocused where they're just jumping from mission to mission with a twist at the end of every episode.

Even with all that, the ending of the episode was still one of the most disturbing things I've seen, I really liked the doctor character and they played the agony of her being shot perfectly and when they locked her in the room I just sat in front of my television stunned.

What in the world gave you that idea?

He actually is in real life too btw..

So I guess we're going to find that this Miracle Day might be one of Jack's jilted lovers? It's possible, but with the build-up of something Jack might have done in his past that brought about this, it just kind of seems unlikely.

At least, not nearly as bad as what he did in the past (and present) for last season's Children Of Earth.

As a heterosexual male, I'm not ashamed to say I love Captain Jack Harkness. He's the best spin-off character to come out of Doctor Who... and his backstory is a great one (even more so in DW - The End of The Universe episodes in Series 3 are some of the best). He's hilarious too.

Unfortunately, there isn't any word on more Torchwood. I'd hope they would continue.
