View Full Version : Impossible To Overrate
There are some people who have so fully transcended their particular field of endeavor that not matter how much praise is heaped on them it's still impossible for them to ever be considered "overrated."
Wayne Gretzky comes to mind. They nicknamed him "The Great One" and he's universally recognized as one of the best (if the THE best) hockey players of all time. He completely changed the game forever and rewrote the record books by shattering the previous marks, not just surpassing them.
Another guy I think belongs in this category is Eric Clapton. I've been re-listening to a ton of his old stuff recently and his guitar playing still blows me away. It's been 40 years since he was proclaimed "God" and he's gone from blues to rock to psychedelia to country to reggae to pop and back again, always playing impeccably, with absolutely killer tone.
Who else ya got?
Any field...doesn't matter. Sports, music, acting, comedy, etc.

The Wire. It is the great American novel, just happened to be a TV show. I have no fear of overhyping when recommending it. Every other show featuring a cop, lawyer, drug dealer, etc. seems fake and poor in comparison.

didn't tiger lose his number 1 ranking to vijay for a while a few years ago? and nadal is leading federer 13-7 overall, but is 9-2 vs him on clay. nadal is getting better but has been a one-surface specialist for the most part. it'd be like tiger losing consistently to some guy who was a mini-golf specialist.
yes, obviously there's hyperbole in there, but you get the point.

Music being subjective and sports being more objective, numbers based, means that music and musicians can more easily be considered overrated.

It's still objective to see a clutch player perform with not the most impressive stats. With music you either like it or you don't, or you're somewhere in the middle. It's subjective.

A Rancid musician amazing? Really?
Matt Freeman is one of those guys who is great at like 10 instruments and I think he comes from a family of really serious musicians. He happens to be in Ranicd. Aside from being a really good bass player he's been hugely influential in what has happened in punk since the late 80s.
Anything the Clash is overrated, which is no small feat, but true, because of much they get brought up.
Alan Moore is impossible to overrate. He works in a bubble so noone is ever doing the work he's doing. You can't really use the same language to talk about his work and everyone elses. None of the artsy fartsy guys can write the low culture stuff he does, and none of the people working on traditional subject matter care so little about money and what other people think. I really feel like he's one of the few people today, working in any medium, that is truly creating his art solely for himself.

Not only did Orr completely change the game in terms of the "rushing defenceman", but he also put up insane numbers that will never be duplicated by a defenceman ever again.
Orr had what I consider to be the greatest statistical season a hockey player has ever had, in 1971
37 goals 102 assists 139 points...as a DEFENCEMAN....(and only 5 of those goals came on the PP)
He was also +124 that year.....+124

Aside from down the lines, Fenway is not really a hitters ballpark. If you can keep it within 20 feet of the polls you can steal a cheap one, but you lose alot of em goin to right center. ALOT.
