I have been doing laps in my pool as excercise and while doing them I thought of a question to ask. Do you sweat while excercising/swimming in a pool? The water would seem to control my body temperature and the moisture is there due to the water but am I sweating as I swim?

This is a beautiful question. I can tell you from personal experience, that sitting in a hottub does indeed make one sweat, but that's not the question you asked.

On the one hand, you might figure "I exercise, therefore I sweat"
But on the other hand you might figure "I sweat to regulate my temperature, and the water does that for me already"

you'd be partially right either way.


There is ONE study done in Australia that measured very carefully body weight pre and post swimming, taking into account intake and output (drinking, pissing, and defecating (just imagine having to dump on a scale to ensure some nerd's science project worked out right)). They found that people do indeed sweat, but at around 1/3 of the volume of "regular" exercise.

I will tell you as a coach and former competitive swimmer, yes you sweat while swimming. In fact the actual effects of sweating while swimming do not actually hit you until after you leave the pool. It is for that reason that we have kids have a water bottle at practices.
And I don't want to question Dr. Steve..but....I would argue that an athlete loses more fluids in a pool due to sweat, at least at a peak workout of 1000 meters in @ 10:00 min over a 2-3 hour period.
