I caught the tail end of a break during Mad Dog Unleashed where he was trashing his staff/on air talent of his channel (Describing them as a "Horseshit staff"). Now I turn on Casey Stern in the morning and all he is talking about is how yesterday Russo went on a rampage on EVERYONE yesterday. Lots of callers calling in saying Russo went too far.

Now Mad Dog just called in and it appears he fired his update man (Steve Torre) for his many errors and more shake ups are coming due to as he put it...they are failing ratings wise and sirius is putting pressure on him. He also was complaining that the talent does not know the history of sports. WOW. I turn on Mad Dog in the afternoon and it is unlistenable because all he does is talking about the 1956 MLB season. He is the Brooklyn Blowhard working afternoon drive.

I always thought David the intern on O&A sounded like Mad Dog. I can only take so much of either.

I agree that his taste is a bit older, but I love his show. He's entertaining and has a great knowledge of sports. Its my 3-6 show at work.

I heard the show yesterday, I thought a lot of it was bit. I doubt he fired torre, if he left he probably moved on on his own.

I started cracking up when he said, "horseshit staff".

I agree that the "history of sports" thing is massively overrated. History has its place but to rehash everything from 1956 and which pitcher won which game 30+ yrs ago..blah blah is too much.

I'll go back and forth w/ Russo and Francessa on wfan.com and switch when I get too annoyed w/ whatever they're talking about, but I think I just need them back together

I don't know how you could say that. He has an amazing memory and knowws A LOT albout sports. I don't care if you don't find him entertaining, but particlarly from.a historical standpoint the guy knows a lot.

Actually I see it just the opposite as you. I think he has an interesting/entertaining gimmick but I have listened to him from the beginning, he really doesnt know shit about sports. He and Mike would quote facts from the Daily News or the Post as if he knew stuff. If you look up some of historical stuff he is dead wrong with alot of shit he says. I guess we have a different definition about what knowing alot is.

I agree that he's an entertaining gimmick, however I think it would be impossible for either of us to prove our points. I always loved how he would describe a game he had watched, and I remember reading in "Sports Talk" by Alan Eisenstock that he was in studio one day and he couldn't believe Russo didn't even have a newspaper in front of him. I always found that pretty impressive.

Also, he constantly has authors on and Russo seems to have read many sports books. He's able to talk to them as a knowledgable guy, rather than some dopey hack that doesn't know shit about sports. It reminds me of Ronnie B. talking about film with a director.

I guess it's just a matter of opinion though.

I've been listening to his show for a couple hours now...this is hysterical.

The guy fires his entire channel on the air. His PD at Sirius called him on air and basically told him he needs to resign his executive producer role for the channel.

To be fair, Dog is right....the channel sucks, as does everyone on it.

But him screaming about not being able to do sports radio if you don't know anything about the '58 World Series or Gone With The Wind is hysterical.

Totally a bit. But it's awesome. At least he's trying to do something interesting and creative.

Yeah, it definitely is. I just heard him interview his just-fired update guy, and I predict he'll be back at work on Monday like normal.

What I did find interesting, though, is his claim that Sirius has told him that he's the 99th most popular channel. Could this really be true? I call bullshit. I'll bet if it is true it's one of those situations where the numbers between the second half of the list are virtually the same.

The staffer does make a valid point, though. The East Coast knows who Russo is, but outside of that he shouldn't be surprised that he's still an unknown quantity. That's the issue O&A also have but refuse to acknowledge. A handful of markets know who they are, but while Stern is a household name thanks to the E! show and his movie O&A don't have that name recognition.

Sirius' biggest problem is their advertising. It's all Stern or other personalities with their own channels. Hardly any mention of their shitty music stations. It's turned into radio that you pay for instead of the cool alternative to FM that it once was. But what would you expect when Mel is at the helm.

They're replaying the MadDog's rants against his staff. There's one rant that he plays "Coming to America" and talks about how he's going to travel across America looking for hosts that know history.

I'm sorry, absolutely hilarious. Great gimmick. I don't know how any Ron and Fez fan couldn't love it.

I thought it was great. I even liked the WWE type the guy I fired now is gonna be my producer gimmick. One caller nailed it pretty perfectly. He said it was like the Howard Stern of sports. Like you said, more like Al Dukes vs. Rory Hamptons.

It makes so much sense to do.
When I prank I scan up and down the dial.
There are so many sports channels yet nothing really distinguishes one from the other.
This might give his the twist it needs to stand out.

I don't mind some of the guys on the channel.

I liked listening to Mike & Murray before Russo came on and I know that one of them still does a show but I'm not sure if there other does ( never knew which one was which ).

I'd glady listen to any of those guys over the sh*t they put on 1050 after Michael Kay.

That NY Baseball Tonight show/segment is awful.

There's not many things in the world I'd rather listen to less than a few consecutiove segments of audio on Girardi/Manual/Larry Hardesty/His Counterpart for the other NY team.

I hate when Don L asks " questions " and they play the previously recoreded bits from the managers.
