i'm not backin' the scientologists here, but l ron hubbard has gotten a bad rep from all of this. from what i've heard, he wrote "dianetics" as a satire, poking fun at modern religion, but a few took it seriously. they formed the religion, not the actually writer of the damn thing. l ron hubbard tried to explain all of this in his autobiography, but by then the scientologists were so wealthy (one of the cute tricks of the religion is you have to give a lot of money in order to achieve more enlightenment) that they bought the rights to the autobiography and shelved it. l ron hubbard spent the last years of his life in a self-imposed exile in hawaii. its a shame, because he really was one of the most talented speculative fiction writers of our time.

L. Ron Hubbard was one of the biggest con artists of the past century. He basically started Scientology as a get-rich-quick scheme, and it payed in spades.
If you want, I could probably dig up some references that explain the process Hubbard went through to create Scientology, and it's clear that he didn't do it just as a joke.

Nah...LRH got caught up in the worship and adulation and basically started thinking that he was God. You'll notice that his claims become more and more absurd and outlandish towards the end of his life.
In any case, it's sad that people buy into all this crazyness. At least religious people have the excuse that they were raised that way.

Try this webpage: http://www.xenu.net/
It totally discredits LRH's wacky cult.

People admired him, he got caught up in it, doens't make him a bad person. more power to him if he could get billions from a sci-fi story.

Willful deception of oneself and others is the defining characteristic of "bad person."

scientology is a modern twist on an ancient religion. certain greeks believed that souls existed in what you might call "the ether" surrounding the earth, and they joined the bodies of new borns. scientology does the same thing with aliens, i believe.
all religions are legitimate, even the ones we see as scams. no one can validate another person's belief structure, or disprove it.

i was just checking out the xenu.net site, and there really isn't anything there that disproves what i said. since his life is basically revisionist history on both sides. I mean, he claimed that man evolved from clams!! How can anyone not see that as satire? taht's like Jonathan swift saying we should kill babies in "a modest proposal."
I think the reason why scientology is popular, is because it feeds on people who have money and feel guilty about it. They hope that by giving there money to there church, it will bring them enlightenment.

It's one thing to be a sci-fi writer, its another thing entirely to start a religion. Dianetics reminded me of those motivational posters that hang on the walls of some businesses (I prefer the parodies of them, which seem much more realistic). The general basis for most religions is the belief in some higher power and that it either created everything or controls everything. I'd say that Scientology falls into the latter category, and the heads of the religion are the ones doing the controlling.
Wasn't there a bunch of bad press they had over a few years about beating people?

the scientologists are known for intimidating people, with violence, threats, economic boycots, or whatever is at there disposal. That is why Hubbard disappeared at the end of his life: he was scared for his safety (the rumor is that he hid in hawaii). Consider him like mickey mouse in the Sorcerer's apprentice: he was overwhelmed by his own creation.

Not to sound brutally cynical, but how long until Horde King pops up to tell us how Hubbard is no bigger a con artist than the Church?

L. Ron Hubbard was a third rate science fiction and horror write with serious delusions.
He began Scientology as a scam to make money, but quickly fell victim to his own press. It was only a short while before he started proclaiming himself as a god.
With such negative energy, I have to go pay $100,000 for a "clay table" healing session.
Time magazine had a wonderful expose of this dangerous cult a few years ago. It is well worth reading.
