So here is the scene for anyone not in the area, which is 99% of you.

A Sonic has recently opened up on a major highway in the Northern New Jersey area. It has attracted quite a line.

Now when I say line, I mean a line of cars that was 30-40 deep when I passed at almost 1am last night. At 6pm one evening when I passed, it stretched down the highway. There is always at least one cop car on patrol directing traffic.

What the fuck is wrong with these assholes? They wait for hours for FAST FOOD!!!!! And I had it when I was in Kansas City. You know what it tasted like? Fast food, and not even great fast food. Decent but nothing remotely special. And then we have to waste a cop to direct these tasteless dolts.

Yet these morons, because they have seen advertisements for it but could never buy it, wait the day away to give their money for sub par food. And its not just Jersey morons, this happens in quite a few places.

Can anyone explain it to me?

Which one are you talking about? I've seen two new Sonics in the area, one on 46 east and 17 north, each of them is always packed and with several COPS on duty. I couldn't fucking believe that they have a cop out there at Sonic directing traffic.

One opened by me 2 weeks ago. It only required police to direct traffic for a couple days but it is still backed up into an adjacent parking lot up until now. I went this weekend around 9 one night and the wait wasn't too bad. The food was incredibly average. I had a cherry limeaid that was fantastic though. I can't see myself going back for anything other than drinks or ice cream. And I wouldn't even go back for that much seeing how bad the line is during the day.

Its those damn commercials. I was in Vegas last week and my producer (who never eats fast food) and I drove by a Sonic and she let the entire car know "Oh! We've got to go there...my kids are dying to try it"

Which really makes no sense when you live in the home state of In-N-Out.

You're right about it being the commercials. I grew up in Texas with a Sonic on every corner and it's very average fast food- possibly below average. Then when I lived in NY for a year there were none up there but the commercials still aired so I think everyone just wants to find out if they've been missing anything. Turns out, they havn't.

Krispy Kreme had the same lines when they opened up in Mass and RI. People would wait 2-3 hours for a donut.

They closed all the stores up here within two years of opening.

I gotta give Sonic credit for knocking it out of the park with their ad campaigns. I've never passed one on a roadtrip where the other people in the car demand to stop there, and I'm usually one of them even though every time has ended with a letdown (except if I get their breakfast burritos).

I guess I could understand going for the sake of curiosity, but like everybody else has said here, the food is just okay. I can't imagine alot of repeat business. We always had one where I grew up, and it's not anything special. I wonder how long it will last?

You bring up an interesting point. I have been going to Sonic since I could drive (13 years) and I still to this day am unsure whether or not to tip. I'll usually tell them to keep the coins if I pay cash but is that too little? And now they have the credit card pay at the menu so what do you do then?

I have no idea. I just found out about it because a coworker of mine has a cousin that works as one. She said she makes pretty good money for a fast food job. I'd imagine the skating ones make a bit more than the non skaters, but that's just speculation on my part.

I've only had sonic twice, their burgers are a lot better then getting a double from mc donalds/burger king etc.

In fact in jersey where I lived it would be the best option for a double, fast food wise anyway.

Unless their are some new options around that weren't there before, like five guys or andys.

5 years of marketing cool and new ideas with the added insult of no Sonic in driving distance makes it appealing

the food is a let down,, I am usually at Sonic at 7 730 am , so no lines for me

plus the outside areas and eating is cool for teens with cars, they can loiter and waste time there and get some average grub

it's all about the texas toast & sonic blasts!

there's one in kingston, ny so we stopped by on our way home last weekend. it just opened two months ago & was busy, but very fast & we really didn't have to wait to find a spot. sooo good. but it probably wasn't very busy cause it's in the absolute middle of nowhere.

my friends waited on line for 45 minutes at the one on rt 17 a few days after it opened. i have no idea what made them go with a crowd like that.

another friend was living in tucson recently & said when the in-n-out burger opened there it caused mass hysteria. i'm sure it was worth it though cause those burgers are mighty delicious.

The Sonic on 17 had quite an incident last nite. A cop was dragged by a car who sped away in anger because he was turned away as the line was too long. You can't make that shit up.

Hah! I just mentioned sonic in another thread..... its just so mysterious. We have so so soooo many commercials for sonic but no sonics where I am. So I myself am just very curious about it.... it has things on the commercial that seem so much better than you average fast food joint.... but is it worth a 45 minute wait and taking up the time of a cop... fuck no. I drive out of a Burger King drive thru after about 5 minutes of waiting in the same spot.

I'm trying to remember when we did NOT have a Sonic around here. Been here so long, I take them for granted. And I guess so does everyone else, because I've never seen a full parking lot at a Sonic, unless they're hosting a Car Show.

It's gotta be the "wanting something you can't have" gimmick that's pulling in the crowds, and wanting to be the first to try something new. It'll wear off.

I don't know why, but I'm always suprised when chain places like Sonic and Krispy Kreme finally hit the NorthEast, and take off the way they do. Especially chains that originated in the South.

But I guess I'm guilty of the same thing. I remember the Buddays hosting events at "Dave and Busters" in the DC area, and found myself checking their site for the nearest location. It sounded like the coolest place ever, and hoped there was one within driving distance.

We've seen the ads down here for a while now, so I would imagine if they ever opened one up within driving distance, it would have the same affect on the people in this area.

I already know that I would most likely be disappointed in the food, and wouldn't be able to stand the crowd, noise, and watching grown men fight over video games... but NOT being able to go is making me want it even more.

I went to a Sonic for the first time on Saturday. It was average at best, although the shakes are really good. The best part was that I ordered a bacon cheese burger, and a cheeseburger. After driving all the way home, I eat the cheeseburger, then open the bacon cheeseburger to find that they forgot to put the burger on the roll.
