If I have to choose which is more sad I'd say aging cougars. Only because they were once "hot" and relied on their good looks to help get them through life. Once it starts fading they have to overcompensate to still be considered attractive. Their whole happiness is wrapped up in appearance and that's just sad. Think Blanche on the Golden Girls.

Men can better compensate for poor looks by being charismatic, outgoing and successful more easily than women can. In that sense, it's more understandable that women would try to hold onto their youth and looks longer than men, as it is more closely tied to their identity and self esteem.
