View Full Version : First MLB game box score.
Jim Kaat is filling in for Jerry Remy this weekend for the Red Sox broadcasts.
He mentioned www.retrosheet.org (http://www.retrosheet.org) as being a neat place to get box scores for old ballgames.
I searched for a few minutes and managed to pull up the box score for the first Major League ballgame I ever went to. (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1970/B07160BOS1970.htm)39 years and 2 days ago. (yeah, I'm old as fuck)
Of course I didn't know that Terry Francona's dad played in that game.
Can anyone else remember enough about their first MLB game to dig up the box score ?

July 8, 1982 - Shea Stadium
Giants vs. Mets
I was 8 years old. I was on a family vacation in NY. My dad, who grew up being a Yankees fan wanted to take me to a Yankees game, but they were on a west coast trip, so we settled on seeing the Mets instead.
We had first base side tickets. I got pitcher Brent Gaff to sign my program, which I still have. Right before the game started a grounds crew guy gave me a ball.
I don't remember anything that happened during the game, but the Giants won 9-7.
I remember the date and score cause when I got home my mom wrote the date and score on the ball.

The fact that Ron Gardenhire was pinch hitting for ANYONE is proof of how bad those Met teams were.

Orioles 10, Sawks 7 (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1995/B09110BAL1995.htm)
Clements vs Mussina in a 'pitching duel.' Mo Vaughn hit a 600 foot home run to straight away center field (at least it seemed that way). Jose Canseco's 300th Home Run, and they threw it back...

I'm fairly certain my first ever game was at Shea but I was really, really young. It had to be sometime around 1985 or 1986, I have no clue who they played. I also remember my first visit to Yankee Stadium but I have no clue what the game was. This is actually a pretty neat idea for a thread though.

April 24, 1992. Dodgers 5, Giants 3 @ Candlestick Park. (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1992/B04240SFN1992.htm)
I was 7 years old and the whole family went (Dad, Mom, Sister, and I).
I wore my Darryl Strawberry #44 Dodgers Halloween costume hoping to get noticed by Straw. My sister told me that he pointed at me and I flipped out, but she admitted 10 years later she was bullshitting me because she thought it was funny.
Brett Butler was walking by the dugout before the game, I yelled at him for an autograph, he said he had to take batting practice, but he'd get me after that. Sure enough, he came back and autographed my ball and he was my favorite player 4 lyfe.
All I remember from the game was Eric Davis hitting a homerun, Orel Hershiser pitching, and a group of drunks behind us screaming DAR-RYl and OR-EL.
