Trouble waking up.

Doc, I have been having touble getting myself out of bed and "up and at 'em". Noticed it a week ago that I was having trouble, so I have been going to bed early and trying to rest as much as I can. But I can't seem to stop hitting the snooze button and getting more Z's. Usally my alarm goes off and I am energized. I am 44 and this seems kind of new. The only diet change has been Nutrasystem over the past 2 months. I also recently have been walking more after being fed up with being sedentary. Could that be it? What elsen aside from forcing myself to get out of bed or not hitting the snooze button should I do? Thanks.

BTW Booster, that does not look good. How did you photograph that? How also do you have access to injectiom stuff. Just curious.

I'd need to know more...in this country especially, when you hear about fatigue, you wonder about sleep apnea. do you snore? do you stop breathing when you sleep?

Other things can include: 1) not enough exercise, 2) low thyroid, 3) low testosterone, 4) bad sleep habits

to fix these things:

1) get regular exercise, at least 5 hours before going to bed (exercising closer to bedtime energizes you and keeps you from sleeping soundly)

2) get your thyroid and testosterone levels checked

3) get the most loud and obnoxious alarm you can find and set it across the room so you have to get out of bed to turn it off. then just convince yourself to not crawl back into bed afterward. as a matter of fact, force yourself to do 20 push ups right then and there. the adrenaline rush you get from the exercise will wake you up.

good luck and let me know how it goes!

your pal,

steve

PS: if you think you have sleep apnea, get a sleep study done. your primary care provider can set it up for you.

My wife sets the 3 alarms on her phone, the alarm clock on the nightstand, and the 2 alarms on the clock across the room.

She sets them all one hour before she really needs to wake up, because she hits snooze sometimes TWENTY times... Drives me fucking crazy.

ha, my situation is even goofier. My wife sets the alarm for an hour before she has to get up. The problem is, the alarm is on MY side of the bed. So it goes off, she says "10 more minutes!" and I have to hit the snooze alarm myself. Ha, well, after all this time, it works for us.

71, I know you have said you are over weight but are excersising more so the apnea thing is possible, but just happing over the past 2 weeks, hmmmm

And the 20 pushups when the alarm goes off is a great idea. When I worked I would do 40 situps, then pour my coffee, and jump in the shower, I felt great.

My schedule has been all mucked up recently and It has had some adverse effects on my sleep schedule. My doc prescribed me Amitriptyline to help. From what I understand it is a pretty benign drug. Should I have any worries?

No, that is a tricyclic antidepressant prescribed at a lower than therapeutic (for it's intended purpose) for it's side effect which is drowsiness. Just watch out for a dry mouth. Practice good sleep hygene and be sure to take it 30 mins to a hour before intended sleep. Also be sure to take it around the same time every night allowing yourself 7-8 hours of sleep.
