On Thursday me and my friend were playing around and he whacked me with a NERF toy sword on the head three times, Now it hurt for a little while and I took some baby aspirin and was fine. However I have heard lately of people receiving head injuries and saying their fine and then dying because if a build up of blood in the head. Will I be ok? The sword was probably made out of foam and plastic.

You are correct sir. Bleeding in the brain can cause a condition where pressure is building up in the brain cavity but all seems well for awhile. Then the pressure builds up to the point where the brain starts to "herniate" through the hole in the base of the skull because there's no popoff valve to equalize the pressure. This results in death.

The kind of injury that causes this is usually hard enough to cause a skull fracture. Very unlikely to occur with a Nerf sword, thankfully.

I did a more exhaustive treatment of this subject when Natasha Richardson died. Check it out here. (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=78916&highlight=epidural+hematoma)

my uncle got hit in the head and he was never the same

a few years later he divorced his wife,

then he met a new girl and they got married.

he got a promotion at work and last year they had a kid

...a girl

bottom line, be careful with head injuries, even nerf ones

Dr. Steve doesn't specialize in toy injuries. I'd go for a second opinion...

A fly just landed on my head. Do I need emergency brain surgery?

Typical of doctors, Dr. Steve ignored any pre-conditions you might be suffering and merely diagnosed the symptoms you were complaining of.

The hit to the head was probably harmless. However, I wouldn't let the "playing with nerf swords" to go untreated. Maybe the dungeon master will let you roll a 20 sided die to see if you survive.

one time i was at a party and they had a kendo stick there. i repeatedly hit myself in the head with it. people were bothered by it. then i kicked open a locked door, left the party and passed out at a dunkin donuts.

In the Army I had 7 head injuries, 3 of which caused loss of awareness (not totally unconscious but have no clue what's going on). I had one skull fracture which I was just observed for 24 hours. I will say I have been lucky, minus some short term memory issues.

The moral of my story is you are likely ok, but if it ever cause blurriness, severe headache, confusion, nausea and or vomiting, then you certainly need to get checked out.

Don't mistake my not commenting on his potentially embarrassing condition with ignoring it. As a player of RPGs myself (though I've never ventured into LARPing, thank all that is holy), I am sensitive to the plight of fellow nerds, geeks, and dorks.

Dr Steve, while you're at it, at it with head injuries, is a pillowcase full of tuna cans dangerous?

I ask because my brother's friend is in prison and 2 men were very sneaky and snuck into his his cell while one man held him down, and the other man rather uncourteously played tuna can pillowcaseheadsie with my brother's friend's human head.

Is that dangerous?

I knew this guy in boot camp who got held down and whacked about 20 times with pillowcases filled with soap. He said "OW" but damn he could shoot good after that.

After "boot camp" and "held down and whacked", I hesitate to ask what "pillowcases filled with soap" represents.
