View Full Version : Celibacy: bad or good for you?
Something that just popped into my head - do people who take a vow of celibacy (ie priests, monks, nuns, etc.) have a higher rate of certain diseases?
I was just wondering if there were any medical studies that would show whether sexual abstinence has certain health consequences or not.

I could have sworn that I remembered a study in priests that showed a slight increase in prostate cancer in those who were truly celibate. However, I searched the medical literature using every combination I could think of and couldn't produce the article. It may be an urban myth.
here are the things you CAN'T catch if you're celibate:
1) pregnancy
2) ectopic pregnancy
3) any kind of adverse effect resulting directly from pregnancy
4) genital chlamydia
5) genital herpes
6) sexually transmitted HIV (if you share needles but are celibate, you can still get it)
7) you get the picture
as far as people having more heart attacks because they don't partake in the orgasmic arts, I could not find any evidence for this.
If I run across anything, I'll let you know!

it is neither good nor bad, but thinking makes it so.

Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake
I bet those who are truly celibate have fewer callouses on their palms too.

People who are celibate are also less likely to get Steve McNair/Arturo Gatti syndrome.

I can tell you that single men are prone to die younger than married men. I want to link the articles but it is through my account with the Texas Medical Center library and Baylor. I will check the info and see if I can post the synopsis with citations.
