NEWARK -- A New Jersey assemblyman and the mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus were among public officials arrested this morning by FBI agents in an international money laundering and corruption probe that includes rabbis in the Syrian Jewish communities of Deal and Brooklyn.
Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt (R-Ocean), Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Secaucus Mayor Denis Elwell and Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega are among those who have been already been brought to the FBI building in Newark. Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini has also been arrested. A total of 30 people have been taken into custody, officials said.
The arrests are the result of a two year probe that began with an investigation of money transfers by members of the Syrian enclaves in Deal and Brooklyn. Those arrested this morning include key religious leaders in the tight-night, wealthy communities
I knew this guy was trouble, coming up under the old Hoboken administration which was tainted as well.
This will be vindication for the woman who ran against him, Dawn Zimmer, and lost only by a slight margin. It shows that half the town was smart and looking for change.

I just called my dad, who still lives in Secaucus, to make sure he had the tv on (live coverage on WWOR channel 9).
My dad says: "Good. That's what he fuckin' gets for not doing anything about people letting their dogs shit on my lawn."
So, let this be a lesson to all of you. Don't cross the Smails' or bad things will happen to you.

We were at the St Anns fair last night and guess who served us our beers Cammarano....
Rocking the same gear he wore for his perp walk!
I know it was a Fed raid but it will be interesting how this effects the race for Governor in NJ
You are 100% right about Zimmer

HAHA!!! That's great! I'm so glad I know that. I voted for Zimmer because she didn't have all the old ties to the neighborhood. She's a nice, smart woman who can certainly help Hoboken even more now.
But the "old ties" run deep. The Hoboken School Board has about 100 members - and close to 70 of them are related to each other!!

Wanna buy a human kidney? If so, you should have been talking to Levy Izhak Rosenbaum of Brooklyn, NY. He's been charged with conspiring to broker a kidney as part of a crackdown on "a corrupt network of public officials who were all too willing to take cash in exchange for promised official action," according to the New Jersey AG's office. Yes, you're reading this correctly. It's just really weird.
Reuters says:
Rabbis accused of money-laundering were Eliahu Ben Haim, the principal rabbi of a synagogue in Deal; Saul Kassin, chief rabbi of a synagogue in Brooklyn; Edmund Nahum, the principal rabbi of another synagogue in Deal; and Mordchai Fish, a rabbi at a synagogue in Brooklyn.
Most of the defendants were arrested early on Thursday by federal agents.
One of the many criminal complaints filed in the case also accused a Brooklyn man, Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, with conspiring to broker the sale of a human kidney for a transplant, at a cost of $160,000 to the transplant recipient.
This guy claims to have been selling kidneys for 10 years. Yikes.

Come on people, Brooklyn is the kidney capitol of the world. Oh and has anyone ever driven through Deal? It's just a little on the rich side, now we know how that came to be.
As for corruption in NJ, especially in Hoboken and JC, ha! That's not even news.

Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini has also been arrested.
Before I even read the article I knew, I KNEW a JC politician HAD to be involved. I'm surprised Mayor Healy wasn't involved. Ehh, he gets bribed with open bar tabs.
Maybe we should get that councilman (or whatever he is) to pee on more dead heads until all this blows over.
I am so ashamed to say I live in Jersey City. Jersey City is like that drunk uncle no one really wants to talk about.
Edit: Mayor Healy may be involved (http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/2009/07/23/is-mayor-healy-jersey-city-official-4/) after all.

I'm not getting how the money laundering, kidney selling, "Jewish" thing is connected to the NJ pols getting bribed for the usual kinds of stuff.
I'm pretty sure everybody they arrested was up to something, but I get the feeling the Feds are running a bit as well.

It was the Feds informant (Solomon Dwek) who tied it all together. You gotta figure much more will be learned as the story unfolds. Some of these guys are gonna sell their mother out to avoid jailtime.

A veteran Hudson County political consultant charged last week in a sweeping corruption sting was found dead today in his Jersey City home.
Shaw's death came on the same day Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, one of six elected officials arrested in the sting, resigned his post.
Cammarano and Suarez, both Democrats, have resisted demands to resign. But fallout from the arrests has had an impact on those around Cammarano. A member of his transition team resigned last week. Today, his chief of staff, Joseph Garcia, quit his $125,000 a year post.

Former Hoboken Mayor Pleads Guilty in Corruption Bust (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36667567/ns/local_news-new_york_ny/)
Former Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano pleaded guilty today to conspiracy to commit extortion in connection with a massive corruption scandal in New Jersey last year.
Cammarano, 32, had been charged with taking $25,000 in bribes from a developer. He pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of conspiracy to commit extortion to try and get contributions for his "future influence in Hoboken government."
According to federal officials, when a government witness offered Cammarano thousands of dollars to push through a fictitious high-rise development plan, the new mayor allegedly said, "Great --and we're going to be friends for a long time."
See ya!
