View Full Version : Ron's 'Socratic Method' is killing me

Listening to the recorded show on my Inno, and this breast feeding discussion is driving me crazy. It seems like EVERY DAY there's one of these discussions that goes absolutely NOWHERE, where Ron keeps asking Fez loaded questions about a given topic, trying to get him to explain his position. All it does is get Fez frustrated, and the listening audience too. I wish they would stop this contrived debate stuff and try doing some COMEDY for once. I feel like Fez is constantly on the ropes, trying to defend himself in one way or another, and I feel his frustration.
How about a comedy pyramid? How about a Fezatorial?
The Ron and Fez show has devolved into Non-Productive Debate Radio. It's like listening to a slightly funnier Rush Limbaugh. For the love of God, can we stop going round and round with these debates that go NOWHERE?

I laugh at every show.
So to me, it's still comedy...

Is it a recorded version of today's show or of a much earlier show? Because I've heard the breastfeeding discussion on the show before.

I am new to the forums (OMG a noob) but I have been listening to Ron and Fez for 3 years now. I think Ron can only work with what Fez is giving him. I love Fez, and when Fez is on its amazingly funny. Just have not seen the Fez we know he can be. So Ron has to do something to keep Fez in the program.. at least that is the thoughts of this Noob.

You can't say try comedy for ONCE, as if they never have, and then...
How about a comedy pyramid? How about a Fezatorial?
give an example of a time when you thought they were comedic.
It's just bad logic.

I take offense. You said slightly funnier Rush, implying that you think Rush is funny on some level. You should be :banning:

I share your pain, Mr.Misery. Fez is as dumb as a brick and Ron seems intent on proving it every freaking day. I keep on waiting for the joke, but it never comes. Enough already.

Ya know, in the end the Socratic Method didn't work out so well for Socrates either.
Last week Fez got demoted from unconditional love to conditional love on one of the shows. Let's see if he can pull it together before the next contract has to be negotiated, Manny Ramirez style. Step up, Fez Marie.

There has to be some kind of backdrop for the comedy. Topics and issues make a better one than constant stunts or celeb gossip, racism if you're O&A, etc.
If Fez defends his position well and it differs from Ron's, then you get a nice little debate with some laughs. If he doesn't defend it well, you get some laughs. The fact that he's taking positions with some confidence lately has improved his contribution. I hear a lot of Old Fez lately, and if it comes out in an argument in favor of deer relocation, all the better.

I find it hilarious that Ron gets Fez to express opinions that 92% of the listeners will hate, especially our more rural buddies. I loved the moving deer rather than hunt them bit. The outrage in those hayseed callers was really funny. Same goes for gay marriage, censorship, government protecting children from spankings, hell, just about every opinion. I think Fez is taking the heel role and it isn't a coincidence that every opinion is the exact opposite of the majority of listener's. I am starting to warm up to this new Fez in an Andy Kaufman kind of way - "I'm gay and liberal!" has become his "I'm from Hollywood!"

Meh. The whole show has taken a turn of late. I've listened to every show possible since the first WNEW 7-11 show. I've seen it take turns for the better and worse and seen people come and go. Truth be told, I probably listed to the show more than is healthy, but the pre-recorded four hour block, sans commercials, fills my round-trip commute perfectly. It's much better than the drivel on terrestrial, and the commercials for breast implants and the payment plans you can take out to receive them.
However, over the last couple of months, listening to the show makes me feel like shit. Every day it's another conspiracy on how our rights are being taken away from us, how the country is going to hell in a handbasket, how things aren't how they used to be when men ruled the world, and on and on ad nauseum.
Granted, I agree with a lot of these sentiments. Things were better in a world when we could choose whether or not to smoke in a bar. Things were also better pre-9/11 and pre-Bush and pre-everything else that we can blame our problems on. Does that mean that I have to be constantly reminded of these things?
People complain that this board is a cesspool of negativity but it is much deeper than that. The whole show of late is so damn negative. Ron bitching and yelling. Fez stuttering, stammering, crying, and trying so hard to please Ron just like he complains about having to do for his mother (again). Dave's trying to amble through life with two kids and no money and not enough knowledge of real life to change his own flat tire. And we get it, Pepper likes drugs and is apathetic about most other stuff. God dammit. Enough already. Go back and listen to some of the older stuff, try to remember why you have a fan base and why your show is so loved by so many. Go back far enough to find a day when there were fun and laughs and actual substance, and not a couple of cackling fucking hens crying about the sky falling. I used to tell my friends about the show and would always mention the "smart comedy". It's just not there any more--and I'm not saying this to bash. I have a hard-core love affair --okay, it's an addiction-- to the show. It just kills me to hear it falling apart before my very ears.

It's more than just a reference though. The title for that style of debate is the "Socratic Method."
If he said that Ron was pulling a Socrates on Fez, that would be an allusion or reference, because then the reader would have to connect the dots from Socrates to the Socratic Method.

I agree to a certain point that ron does that to fez on a daily basis but he usually is using fez's opinion to make a point on some people's dumb views on society and i think monday he was just in a fuckin pissed off mood. it wasn't until the last hour that i laughed and they usually get me during ichibans. Everybody gets in a pissed off mood. I was disappointed but thats maybe the only time i've ever said that about the show and tuesdays show was just solid. You ever think Ron maybe had a case of the Mondays? And what must have made it worse is the poor bastard thought it was friday.

It mainly seems like Ron asks the so-called loaded questions to get Fez to participate in the show on days he seems extra quiet. Riled up Fez or not, it keeps the show moving.

I honestly think ronnie is bored.
I think most of the show ronnie is just trying to get to the end of the show.
Fezzie gets on ron's nerve so Ron goes after him.
I think Ronnie gets tired of carrying the show for 3 hours and intentionally busts Fezzie's balls.
In Ronnie's defense...Fez was much stronger and brought much more to the show in previous years.
I absolutely love fez..he has been nothing but extremely nice to me when I met him both times.
But Fezzie is the quietest on air personality ever.

Hard for me to say, but I agree. I have also been around since the WNEW 7-11 days. I listen to the show every day, every minute of it, but it's starting to feel like an obligation. Luckily I also am catching up on the WJFK stuff I couldn't hear, and it is really amazing when I flip between the two. I can't even believe that Fezzie hasn't been replaced by a semi-retarded clone somewhere along the line. How can it be the same person? How could a person fall so far? How could a person collapse like that?
I'm really tired of the "show is changing" line. Enough. That's a copout way of saying the show is dying. It is not even 30% as funny as it used to be. Now I still love it, and it's the only show I listen to consistently, but I don't enjoy it as much as I used to.
I am to the point where I have accepted that Fez will never be back. People who say "I heard some old Fezzy the other day," don't remember what Fez used to sound like. Trust me, you don't. He is not even close to where he was, even on his best current days. I don't know if that will change, but I am done waiting. I will learn to love this show, but unfortunately the joke Ron used to make about how funny Fez used to be, just isn't a joke anymore.
