I heard on a talk show today that airlines are being sued for 9-11 and that it might have to do with lawyers seeing an admission of guilt by the government because the families of the victims were given money for the tragedy. Also, apparently the actor James Woods claims that he saw the hijackers practicing a week before on another flight and he says he warned the government and they failed to take action.
What kind of action could the government had taken? Shut down all flights? What about the airline industry? Don't we all benefit from this industry in some form or another? Travel is one aspect, shipping is another.
Are suits like this a way for lawyers to just attempt to make money?
Where does it stop? If the airlines were culpable, what about the rental car companies that the hijackers used? What about customs allowing them into the country? Its endless.

Prior to November 2001, security at all the airports (at least in terms of screening checkpoints) and security of the aircraft itself was the responsibility of the air carriers themselves. So it is entirely reasonable to hold the airlines responsible.

As to what the government, the FAA did not have authority to prevent a person from flying. There was no "No-Fly List" back then. So even if James Woods had all of the hijackers names, birth dates, SSN's, driver's license numbers, and passport numbers, the FAA still could have done nothing.

As for Customs (at the time it was INS, not customs. INS was broken up and merged into CBP, ICE, and CIS) letting them in; all but one of the 19 entered legally. there was no reason to stop them

What kind of action could the government had taken? The government should not have ignored the memo titled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.".

Apparently that memo was written on August 6, 2001 barely a month before the attacks. The last paragraph says they have over 70 active "full field investigations" ongoing. Hardly seems like it was ignored.

sr71 thinks we need to put a stop to ocean liners plowing full speed through icebergs ASAP.

Hijacking a plane was a foreseeable event. Crashing the plane, instead of landing it, was foreseeable. Israeli airliners took precautions to keep the cockpit secure that other airlines did not because it cost a couple hundred dollars a plane.

Were the airlines reasonable in their actions? No one expects perfection, but you have certain responsibilities.
I am pretty sure a settlement could/would not be used to prove anything. There are many reasons to settle that do not involve culpability.

The other day I was actually reading a story about some poor woman in florida. She's incapacitated, a "vegetable" if you will, and her unfaithful husband wants to pull her from life support, but her parents want to keep her alive because they think she will pull through. Apparently it's a hot issue down there, just wondering what you guys think about it.
