Literally.

I have this co-worker that I generally like, and he generally does a good job, but lately he's been making some mistakes that we really can't have happening. I don't know if there's something going on in his personal life, or maybe he's just getting tired of the job, but more and more I find myself covering for him, or cleaning up his messes (figuratively).

Several times I've told the boss things like "we were both working on that project" or "maybe there was a misunderstanding" or something to diffuse the weight. I think the boss knows I'm doing that, and it helps give the guy the benefit of the doubt or time to fix a situation himself.

I do this because I feel like because we're equals, we're supposed to stick together. Us against the boss, sort of. However, I feel like at some point I'm going to have to let the guy swing on his own. Right?

How far do I have to go with my loyalty to this guy?

The right thing to do is to discuss this issue with the co-worker himself. See what his issues are, tell him that you feel you're covering for him, and it's started to bother you to do so, because it means more work for you etc.

Give him a chance to clean his act up, and get better. If he doesn't take it, then I think you should then look out for yourself, because that's all he's doing.

Work is no different than life in that aspect. If their screwing up is making your work more difficult, then you have to change that before you're viewed as a problem too.

Absolutely, let him know that you've had his back but his fuck ups are starting to drag you down too.
