I have been watching Sandler's attempts to broaden his career.
Some of his attempts have been interesting.
He has worked with two truly great directors, Jim Brooks and Paul Thomas Anderson but neither did their best work with him.
Does Sandler have a great movie in him?

He does. It's called "Grown Ups" and it will be released Summer of 2010.

It will be great because I am a featured extra in that film. Also, they had the greatest Lobster Quesadillas in craft services.

So let's sum up...

Me + Lobster Quesadillas = Academy Award for Best Picture

Never liked Sandler but he is possibly the most successful alumni of SNL. and some of his dramatic turns have shown promise.

Commercially or artistically? Because I'd take Bill Murray's career over Sandler's as an actor any day.

Funny People is a step in the right direction. Sandler and Apatow are commenting on their own lives. It's awkward and uncomfortable and more of a drama than a comedy. But it has some merit.

Yes. I think he can act. I also think that Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and the Waterboy stand up against Animal House, Stripes and Caddyshack.

I think someday he'll have his Lost in Translation.

i thought his 2 girls one Sandler video was disgusting. He needs to narrow his career.

Funny People is too goddamn long. The final third becomes an Apatow home movie where his wife and kids smile and make cute for forty minutes. The downfall of the film shockingly wasn't an inability to streamline fictional stand-up into a comedic narrative. I saw it with people who laughed a lot during the first two acts but still walked out having nothing terribly complimentary to say because the final few reels were so (ironically) life-draining.

P.T. Anderson was on to something when he scaled Punch-Drunk Love down to 90 minutes. At least if he directs at length, he's the type of director who can continually wow the viewer with visual craftsmanship. Judd is no P.T., even though he enlisted visionary Spielberg DP regular Janusz Kaminski for his latest foray; it was surely the easiest gig Mr. K ever had with the simplicity of these camera set-ups where anybody off the street could've shot it.
