Dear DrSteve,
Does not sleeping slowly turn you insane? How long can the average human go without sleep before they lose their sanity? Why is this? What is the physiological component of sleeping that the brain requires in order to maintain sanity?
Thanks,
Coffee

Ha, another excellent question that no one really knows the answer to. I mean, why the hell would GOLDFISH need to sleep? The theory is that somehow the brain needs to do some housekeeping procedures once a day and it can only do it when the conscious part of the brain is shut off. One explanation is that the chemicals used in the brain (neurotransmitters, doncha know) accumulate over time and need to be reabsorbed...the only way to do that is to "rest" the brain. Lack of sleep causes emotion problems, irritability, hallucinations, and a host of other symptoms. In lab animals it can even cause death.
As far as how long you can go, it depends on the person. One guy was documented to go for over 11 days without sleep, without stimulants.
Sleep is good for you...I recommend it.

After 4.5 days I was pretty out of it. I hallucinated a little and was definitely not right, the words coming out of my mouth sounded funny in my head.

I've done 4 days and change, pretty much until my skin started to hurt. I've been to the edge of sanity/insanity and it's scary. I can only liken it to operating machinery where your tired confused brain is the operator and your body is the machinery.

36 straight hours of patients and the fucking desert made me have to fall asleep when my internist called and said we can't handle anymore, we need sleep (the guy was a green officer but had balls).
I can go 2 days if I do not take my sleep meds, after that even with anti-depressants and Klonopin I go down hill mood wise.

Due to Hectic Scheduele, I have recently gone 4 days with no sleep and have felt sluggish at worst. The human brain is an amazing thing, just a lil' stimulation to get the ole' waves flowing i.e. Music, always brings me out of my sluggish stooper, or something that gets the heart pumping works good too.

I can't remember if I posted in this thread...but I am not going to look it up. I think I have went a year with very little sleep. The last time with no sleep was when I was in labor for 38 hours and then was up for another 24 hours after the birth....so like 62 hours...

I can barely go 24 hours. I pulled an all nighter my freshman year for finals and was so tired during my history essay test I was nodding off and would write a sentence or two of gibberish on my test. My brain must need a lot of "housekeeping".
