View Full Version : What would you have done?

I've never made a post about something this dumb, so bare (bear?) with me.
I pulled up to the local McDonald's drive through today for some quick lunch, and ordered my usual Large Number 2 Meal (2 Cheeseburgers) and a Power-Ade. The guy who took my order was slow punching it into the machine and instead of telling me how much it was, he just said "Drive around." I asked how much it was, even though I know it always comes to about 6.35 and he didn't even answer. So I drove around to the side and handed him exactly $7.00. He put down his phone (he had been texting) and took my money. Counting out the 7 singles, he paused, then handed me 20 cents back. I didn't think anything of the pause, I figured he was just trying to do math in his head.
I know if it was 6.35 I should have gotten 65 cents back, but I wasn't going to argue over 45 cents (which I usually just toss in the Ronald McDonald charity box below the drive thru window anyway.) So I pulled forward and the woman hands me a Medium sized Coke. (Nevermind the fact it was Coke and I had ordered Power Ade) I told her I ordered a Large. She got the receipt and said, well he charged you for a medium. I told her, well "I just paid for a Large." I then explained he never told me the price and was too busy texting and gave me 20 cents change on seven dollars. She said that the medium comes to $5.80 and that 20 cents change was correct. I proceeded to calmly tell her again that I gave him 7, so either he's ripping me off for just a dollar or it's a misunderstanding and I'd just like my large POWERADE not Coke and I'd be on my merry way.
So she starts yelling in Spanish to someone I can't see and she says I'm sorry, you have to pay the difference if you want a Large. I again told her that I already had but she didn't want to hear any of it. So finally she goes "Well, if it will get you out of here and change your tone, I'll just give you the Large." So she does and I drive off.
Now, I know I can be a big jerk sometimes without realizing it. But this one instance I purposely let her know I was annoyed but conveyed it in a calm voice so I didn't come off as "that jerk" that yelled at the drive thru girl over a Large drink.
Now, anyway... would you have argued or just taken the Medium and driven away? Was I the jerk for saying something or should I have just let the kid take my extra dollar without saying anything?

I probably would have let it slide until she made that remark.
Then the car would be in park and a real discussion would start.

Of course you should have said something. I would have started with the cashier though to get the correct change but since you didn't you should have at least gotten the correct drink. Don't let someone else make you feel like you shouldn't get what your ordered and paid for!

You were absolutely right. You have every reason to get what you paid for.
If they changed their prices since the last time you were there, they shouldve realized that was the problem and explained it to you.
Youre gonna order a large power aid and be happy with a medium coke? CMON!

You were completely in the right. 100%. But the reason it will happened to you again is because shit holes like McDonald's know they can get away with employing kid touchers from the local halfway house for minimum wage because they know you'll keep coming back for your $6 grease patties and sugar water.
I say hit up a local place that sells decent food and doesn't claim to have sold to 20 trillion customers.

Alright, good. I feel better now... I guess I really wasn't questioning the fact I demanded what I paid for, but rather wondering if anyone else would say something or just accept it and move alonge. The reason I questioned myself this time was that the people inside the store were looking at me through the drive thru window like I was a lunatic and this woman made it sound like I was crazy too.
What I really would have liked to have done was unleash a string of F-Bombs on this bitch and the kid texting, but like I said I was trying to stay calm so I wasn't the jerk yelling at the teenage McDonald's girl.

I would have commented on the kid texting already. And the girl getting fresh, I would have told her to change her attitude towards customers.
I see the texting all the time at registers, I mean its one thing to do when you have no customer and down time, but when it's done while serving a customer it would be reasons to be fired if I owned the business.

Not only were you right, but you should call and request to speak with a manager and report everything that happened. They are usually thankful for this feedback, and may give you some sort of coupon or free meal or whatever. Whenever I receive particularly good or dreadful service anywhere, I call. As long as you are polite and convey yourself in a calm manner, they generally take your input seriously - particularly if you are a regular customer.

I would have caused a stink, had them
A: Count the till and notice the extra $$ was in there
B: Have them look at the surveillance tape to prove A; They are Wrong and I ordered a Large Poweraide B: they cheated me out of $$
C: Make the manager feel like shit for thinking he was right from the get go
I am a what they call a spiteful scumbag, it would all be about being proven right, if they wouldnt gie me that chance, then pretend they are right until food is given, then I would cite every profanity in the book
this would ofcourse mean i would have to find a new McDonalds, but there is one every 5 minutes

The exact opposite happened last time I went to McDonalds. They got my meal 100% correct and I gave the kid enough change to get a dime back but he gave me 35cents back instead.
I would have made a stink though, depending on my mood. Considering how little the drinks really cost, they shouldnt have even have thought twice about giving you what you asked for especially if you're blocking the drive-thru.

would have mentioned it, but not worth an argument over. especially when they're preparing food.

I would have taken the coke and food without saying anything, then asked for a receipt. Then I would have parked and taken everything back inside and asked for a manager. I would have 1st mentioned the slowness of the kid at the payment window and the texting he was doing while taking orders. Showed him the receipt and mentioned what you should have paid and you know what the price is because you are a regular at that store.
If the manager was any kind of "real" manager, you should have gotten an apology, and maybe even your money back with the powerade as well.
These kids now a days have no idea how good they have it because they are working. Long gone are the days that you could go from one FRY job to another. You need to bust your ass in the working world now because there are 100 people in line for your job that will do it better.

It's alot of work for little money, but sometimes it can make a difference. Contact them online, they'll probably send you a coupon for your next visit. I say this but then I rarely follow through unless they were real nasty... link here (http://apps.mcdonalds.com/contactus/navigate.do?link=restmatters)

ugh, that shit happens all the time. precisely why i worked there for 3 days.
you had every reason to be annoyed. mcdonalds is a terrible job and the people that work there are miserable. this is especially true for managers because, while they have climbed up the mcdonalds ladder, they're still on the bottom rung compared to any other manager working any other job.

It's more of a plastic slide than a ladder.

Of course you were right. The one other thing I would have done is to ask to speak with the manager right at the drive through window and put my car in park and turned off the ignition until the manager showed up.
I rarely go to mcdonalds anymore because they rarely get everything right at the drive through, and if you actually go in to order at the counter, they couldn't care less about you. Everyone is dedicated to the drive through customers.
I especially like their little trick of taking your money at the drive through and asking you to pull into a parking space until your food is ready.

Exactly.. if you want the food remotely fast, you have to go drive-thru. But then you run the risk of them fucking up your order, so you have to go through the hassle of checking it all before you leave the lot.
Whenever I go inside and get service from the counter, it's pathetic... your burger and fries takes like 10 minutes to get from the prep area 10 ft away to your tray.

In my opinion, you handled yourself perfectly. Forget the money, a dollar isn't going to make or break anyone (and if it is, you have far worse problems than this lol). Its the principle of the whole thing. They messed up and you pointed out their mistake, her remarks were uncalled for, and in the end, you win. You got what you want, and she returns to her miserable life working the drive through.

If I could, I probably would.
That's one rule I stick to though... no fast food at work. There's too much fast food (most times the only option) in airports, so I usually pack my own lunch. Plus, it's cheaper that way.

Other than not eating shitty McDonalds in the first place I agree totally with Hippo. It's a fucking customer service driven industry and you just got the poorest of the poor service and not treated like a customer.
Minimum wage did recently go up, I wonder if that is why you got 0.20 instead of 0.65 back?

If you haven't been taught how to act like a human then your fat, pathetic, short-sleeves-and-a-tie dirtbag manager isn't going to be the one to teach you either. And what if you do get fired from McDonalds? Wendy's is hiring, so is White Castle. Might as well keep that overly tatted, barely literate asshole at the window because he/she is as good as it gets anyway. Anyone any better is at least working at Wal Mart or Home Depot, where you have to pass a drug test and are usually expected to be half a step above savage.
