I have a question about what I should do with my grill, and didn't want to start a new thread just about that. So I thought I'd create this thread where we can post questions like it in the future.
I have a Viking gas grill with three burners: right, middle and left. The middle one works absolutely fine, but the left one, even on high, cooks at a low temperature. I've reattached the gas line, cleaned the gas jets as best I could without removing it, and still nothing.
Is this something I should get a repair man do? Or am I missing something easy?

You own a viking grill. http://mob116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/mookiemmm/Gifs/jawdrop.gif
any way. if its like any other viking or nice range. If you were to take the tube off where the gas goes, there is a spinny thing at the front where it connects to the gas line. Check to make sure that is open. That controls the oxygen that mixes with the gas for a hotter burn. It also might be dirty or clogged.
hard to really paint a picture of it using theatre of the mind.

Good topic
We just got a new grill with porcelain grills I believe. I think the usual wire brush will be too
harsh . Are there any other cleaning brushes for that material ?

Just to be certain, we're talking about the main gas line to the grill, and not just the line to the specific burner.
As for the Viking, when I bought the house, the seller gave it to us for free. I was suprised he didn't try to up the price, but he was a great guy.
Plus, he left two refridgerators and a freezer.

I'd pay handsomely for one. I have a few brushes that are basically crap.
The guy from this show (http://www.bbqu.net/) was using a real nice one but I was half-asleep and forgot the name. Anyway, seemed like a good show/site.

im guessing there are three tubes that are the burners.
Those are what im talking about. If you remove the burners at the end where it connects to the main feed there should be a little thing in there that rotates.

I think he means the line from the control knob to the burner. There is usually a hole that allows air to mix in. Bugs love nesting in there. They usually have some type of plastic screened cover that snaps around the opening

Thanks to you both. I'll check it out.

If the burner in question can come off....turn it upside down on top of your best burner and "cook it clean"
Just burn off all that shit that is clogging the gas holes. Let it burn for a little while. Then afterwards while it's still a little hot....bang it out on the cement or something. Return it and get grilling.
I think what Mexi is talking about is the air valve on the feed nossel to each burner. It's a butterfly looking turn jobby that can allow for more or less air.

yes but its really hard to explain it with a diagram or someone that hasnt worked in a kitchen.

I thought about that before, but the burners are a bitch to get off. I was about to do it, and then just decided that I didn't want to wreck it.
I did take a metal needle/prong and poked into all of the gas holes in the hopes of dislodging the crud. Would that have been enough to address the problem you are suggesting?

Yes, the title sucks. I'll change it to the best recommendation that talks describes questions dealing with technical (for lack of a better term) grilling issues as opposed to cooking, recipies, etc.

My big gas grill is like that and it is recommended to use a copper scouring pad to clean the porcelain. Most wire brushes are way too abrasive.

The burners should lift out after removing the gas tubing that has the 3 jets on it. Even though you have burner guards that keep the crud from coming in direct contact with the burner you can still have crud built up or since it is brass and if older some of the holes may have joined together (brass will eventually corrode and melt).

That's the venturi valve...
http://www.grillsearch.com/Gif/restor3b_1_.gif
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to clean the Venturi tubes of any obstructions, such as spider or insect webs, etc. A small web can block the gas flow and cause poor burner performance or a flash back fire. A specially made flexible spider brush should be used to clean the venturi tubes (fig. 15). Special care should be taken to make sure the brush passes through any curve in the venturi tube.
http://www.grillsearch.com/Gif/restor3c_1_.gif
If a spider brush is Not available, you may flush out the tubes with a strong flow of water from a garden hose (fig . 16). Pay special attention to how the water exits the burner port holes, as clogged holes are easily spotted. Clogged holes can be opened with an awl or piece of wire (fig. 17). Clogged holes can cause a grill to have hot and cold spots because of uneven flame characteristics.
If that doesn't work... I say sell the fucker on Ebay and buy a Weber Performer (charcoal w/gas lighting) or a "Big Green Egg". The only gas you'll find at one of my BBQ's is from too much coleslaw or from the grill top baked beans!

I found the Venturi Valve and it's open enough. I looked to see how I would get the burner off and still not sure, but I'll keep looking.
Thanks to everyone.

Any chance you know the model # or name.
there's probably a manual available here (http://www.vikingrange.com/consumer/library/documentation.jsp?id=cat40032)

If you can't get the model # you could probably look at some of the manuals and at least get an idea of what your dealing with.
Good luck.

Thanks. I'm hoping I can find the model # on the grill. If not, I will do as you suggest.

i have a weber gensis silver a. its a 2 burner that i converted to natty gas.
i have always had a weak flow of gas to my burners. just this year, i took out the burners (again) to clean them. i have those spider guards. i took off the screw that holds him in place and twisted the guard so that the solid part of the guard covers the air hole (basically rendering the spider guard pointless). put it back together. now i have a fucking rocking flame. i was getting too much 02 not enough gas. eli, you might want to try just fucking with the spider guards if you can. please dont blow yourself up. report back. im guessing that is your problem and the solution.

thanks joethebartender.
I was just unsure what to call it and i still will not call it a spider guard.
Dumb prick spiders.
But i am guessing it something to due with gas/air mixture for certain.
kinked propane line maybe even?
Dude!
