I've wondered this for awhile. How come paralyzled people don't all get really fat. I'm not trying to be offensive or anything but if they can't exercise much and they can't burn off the food, how come they are often able to maintain a respectable weight?

IKEABOY - That's an excellent question, but your basic assumption has to be reconsidered. You ask why paralyzed people don't get fat, but in many cases, they do.

Any injury that results in not being able to exercise WILL result in weight gain unless the person reduces the number of calories injested.

It's a simple formula - same number of calories with less exercise = weight gain.

I've found from my personal experience as a lawyer with severely disabled clients, and as an attendee at several pain management workshops, that the vast majority of people who are disabled experience a substantial weight gain. Ironically, those who don't are often chronically depressed and don't care that much about eating. Of course there are some who want to remain thin, and maintain eternal vigillance over what they eat.
