View Full Version : I registered my own domain name. Am I being paranoid?

I just went and registered deathmetalmoe.com. I was listening to the Ron and Fez replay where Fred from Brooklyn and Mafia Life Chris were fighting about domain names and I have to admit it made me a little paranoid. Any asshole can get your name and cyber squat on it. And really, when they have it I'm not sure how hard it is to get it back from them. I mean you probably could but you're probably going to have to get a lawyer and waste time in court. I doubt very much a few E-mails would get them to free it up and paying someone's shake down isn't even an option in my mind.

It was less that $11 for a year, went to godaddy.com. Not a plug for them, it was just cheap.

Has anyone else done this or am I just being a little too paranoid? I have no plans to even design a site for my domain name I just didn't want some scumbag to have my name.

A tad paranoid and a little arrogant thinking someone cares that much.

I was thinking that too, but then there's the other side of the coin where people went to use their names and suddenly found the domain name was taken.

I have absolutely no aspirations of starting a web show, any webisodes, a fansite, a blog or even a stupid site to just put photos on. I do feel a little paranoid after actually registering the name but I think it's worth $11 a year for the "just in case" chance.

I guess really, when you think about it, there's only a few dozen people tops that even know what a "Death Metal Moe" is and none of them would even consider looking for me on the web.

Even with that rationalization, I still can't shake thinking of the feeling I'd have if I needed to use that domain name and some cocksucker had stolen it.

I'm paranoid but still feel good about this one.

first off that is not your name, it is your internet moniker, which basically means nothing. Also, how many times have you went to www.SomeOnesBoardName.com

it never happens, so i think it was kind of silly. but for 11 bucks, whatever, if it gives you peace of mind it is fine

I have a bunch of web domain names reserved:

- A number of variations of my real name
- EddieMoscone.com reserved (for when I finally open my big Midnight Run Tribute Site)
- a number of other website that I used to run that are no longer active (strictlyecw.com, hcradio.com, piersixbrawl.com)
- Past and planned business opportunity websites that never panned out
- my wedding website

I think I really need to transfer them all over to godaddy to save some cash. Can I do that?

Well, that's one person who has site domains reserved. Glad I'm not the only one.

So more people in your life call you "deathmetalmoe" then your real name?

Seriously?

That's a little odd.

More people online is what I meant. No one in my real life calls me "Death Metal Moe." But in an online capacity, way more people know me as Death Metal Moe.

I own a few domains. RonFez.Net, RonFezFiles.Net (when we had the old site, we thought about separating out the library to help server probs), JustJon.Net, and a few others.

I own my name. I'm the sole proprietor of my photography business, so it's just myname.com. My email address is me@myname.com.

I registered my son's name when he was born, too. We're doing a blog for him, but even if we weren't, why wouldn't we? It costs almost nothing.

That's kinda how I felt about it. I just feel better knowing it's mine if I decide down the road to do something with it.

Yes, you can. Easily. if you need help, just PM me. (and no I wont scam you, dont listen to the mlc haters)

Mikeyboy did bring up 2 very iscolated times that I felt slighted by so called friends, and retaliated by squatting. What he forgot to mention is that when i finally calmed down, and grew up, and stopped acting like a big baby, I offered the domain back to them. I was wrong ethically.

As I said on air, many of the domains I grabbed are because I know scumbags are in my industry and grab names up to try and fuck good people out of thier own names to build websites.

I will say this.... I VOW that if I EVER buy a domain name that is for your moniker I WILL always say YES, and transfer it to you for free. (As long as you did not attack my family in ANY shape or form. If you did, youll get nothing, and like it). You can use this post as proof, of my promise to you all!!

99% of the times I had a show related name, I did it to protect it. I always let them know I have it, and offer it to them.

PS: Moe, unless you legally have the copywrite on the exact domain, you cannot do shit. I have seen strong companies such as pepsi only get as close as being forced to BUY it after a long battle. Take bodog.com for example. they OWNED it for years, and forgot to pay for the renewal and some kid purchased it, and they had no choice after YEARS of battling to change thier domain name to bodoglife.com until the suit was over, and in the end had to BUY it.
