With Smoltz retiring, hopefully he will go in the hall of fame the same time as Glavine and Maddux. This would be a good baseball story with all the negativity in baseball today.

He can't because he played this year, plus Glavine is by no means a lock to be a 1st ballot guy.

I guess he just didn't want to do anything but start at this point, which is too bad because he likely could have played a couple more years as a setup guy or a closer. His k to bb ratio was still excellent this year despite how everything played out.

If he's been pitching regularly the way he did last night he is done. He started out throwing only on the outside of the plate so that he needed to perfectly paint the corner or get someone to chase. After a couple of innings the Yanks stopped chasing and virtually every time he challenged hitters over the plate he got hammered. Almost every ball hit off him was hammered. Even in the first 2 innings when he was getting by he was getting his outs because batter were hitting the ball hard right at fielders.

It was actually a bit painful to watch. He had nothing and he looked like he knew it.

True, but:

K:BB ratio of 33:9 with a 7.4 k/9

Though on the other hand:

Left handed hitters have an OPS of 1.257 against him this year.

OK, maybe not a closer or a setup guy....maybe just a ROOGY?

Oh yeah, that's another thing. Right before he was pulled they put up a stat. Righties were 0-4 against him and lefties were 7-11.

I think a ROOGY would be all he could do at this point.

I hate to see him go out this way.I lived in Atl in the '90's and used to love to watch the guy.It must be harder than I think to just ride off into the sunset. On the plus side he has plenty of time to get tuned up for the Senior tour.

Him and henderson should do like a 21 jumpstreet type sports movie.

Is his annoncing retirement like when a girl broke up with me and I told all my friends I dumped her? Sounds like it to me.

And can you imagine how it must have felt to Smoltz to be told he's done by Theo Epstein who's like 30 years old. That musta stung even worse.
