My kids were watching the Simpsons episode where they go to the Renaissance Faire and they asked me to take them. I've never been, even though some friends in highschool would go every year, so I have no idea what to expect.

The research I've done online has revealed a very mixed bag. Some people rave about it. But are these just your typical "Comic Book Guy" nerds who are easily impressed with this shit? Other people carry on that its a big rip off. But are these just the nasty complaining fucks who are all over the interweb opinion sites?

I got free passes for the kids at our library and I see that its $20.00 a person to get in for me and my wife. This could either be a bargain or a raping depending on what I get for that 20 bucks of which I have no clue.

So, anybody been? Any advice? Go? No go? Go fuck myself? Hello?

Yep that's the one. Remember, the kids asked - I'm just trying to be a good dad.

i went like 3 years ago, it wasn't bad. It's sort of like Comic Con but outside, lots of smelly people cosplaying. But other than that, they have several good things like Jousting, Human Chess, "Thrill" Shows (Dextre Tripp I think is his name?) and other things that are worth the trip. If you've never been, I recommend going at least once in your life.

When you talk about these shows - are they included in the admission or are you nickel and dimed for everything you want to do? Other than food and souveniers, do I need to pay for anything?

the shows are included. The only other thing that needs to be paid for are the carnival type games like throwing axes which are like 2 dollars. I don't remember any nickel and diming. But there should've been, it's a RENAISSANCE FAIR!

I started one of these threads last year, not a lot of extra info, but at least a little: http://ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=71824

It's a good time if you take it for what it is, some of the shows are reasonably entertaining and you can always get good and drunk out there. Sarah and I go most years and enjoy ourselves. Not sure if it's the same act but last years birds of prey show was priceless, the jackass lost 3 of them.

And no outside of food/junk and I think the program you're not paying anything extra. Food is expensive but not insane, all in all it's not a bad way to spend a Saturday with kids.

I went a few years ago to the one in Sterling Forest, Tuxedo, NY about two years ago with a bunch of people. It was an amusing day out. Ended up eating about 10 pounds of food, it was delicious. Huge turkey legs, pickles, mead, beer, fries, dont remember it all but it's where most of our money went. Watched some goofy shows, things like live action chess matches and musical acts and went into a house of torture horrors.

It's pretty big so you can spend a big chunk of time there. If you have a free ticket then why not go? You'll have to spend some money on food for them but with everyone dressed up walking around in character doing their thing it's a fun time.

I go almost every year. I love it. I have been there so many times my husband and I know a lot of the performers and artisans. The acts and demonstrations are great. I'm a huge Shakespeare buff so I always look forward to seeing which play the do or poke fun of. I always seek out The Crimson Pirates, they sing drinking songs and sea shantys. I have all their CDs. And if you are into artisan crafts it is the best. I buy a lot of jewelry there and pottery.

I went this past weekend with my girlfriend and her family (I have acquired a total of 9 tickets to this, from a combo of Blood Donations and Contests). It was a good time. Although all we saw were several shows where people do stupid stuff, like "2 Stoopid Guys", "Dextre Tripp Thrill Show" and "Mudd Brothers". The scenery is very nice, they have manpowered children's rides that look like they'd be fun and they have $7 turkey legs. The Royal Joust was pretty disappointing this year, but it's just dumb fun. It's definitely a unique experience that should be had. I also thought up a sweet tagline for the random wenches selling roses around the faire, and that's "Roses for a Fee; Motorboatin's for Free"

FYI Kat, the '09 Mainstage is Taming of the Shrew. (I'm on their e-mail list. Yeah, I'm a dork.)

If anyone is thinking about the Faire this weekend, remember it's also open Monday (7/7/09 is Labor Day) ... and my sister and I are considering a schlep up.

Does anybody know if ShopRite still offers discount tix?

There's actually a bus from Port Authority that goes straight to the one in Tuxedo (Sterling Forest) if you are car-less. You can get a combo bus/Faire ticket from ShortLine/Coach by clicking on the link from the Faire's website:

http://www.renfair.com/NY/general/bus.php

The combo ticket is a 1-day thing and costs $50, so it's kind of steep if you're on a budget. But, if you make the most of the day (bring lots of sunscreen) it's worth the price.

and, liz, labor day is in september not july

I totally didn't realize I'd typed "7" instead of "9" ... I have nothing to blame but my lousy typing and lack of proofing. Wow.

New York State Thruway to exit 15A - Sloatsburg. The next town is Tuxedo where the festival is held.

When you get off the exit you'll make a left on to 17 north. Follow that to the signs for the fair, which will be on 17A. It's a left turn about 5 miles up.

This is such a big deal in that town that they have permanent (or what it seems like permanent) signs up (as if they were traffic signs) pointing to where the renfaire is.

We went this year. Couple of thoughts:

1) It rained so much that the food "court" had that rank swampy smell.

2) Blooming onion was disgusting and I asked for my money back.

3) I guess it's fun if you're just a couple or your kids can walk on their own without guidance, but it's a nuisance with a toddler + stroller.
