Did This Make Me Look Like an Asshole?

Okay. On Sunday, my older daughter was at a birthday party at Victorian Gardens. That's an amusement park thing they set up on the south end of Central Park. My wife just left the country, so I have the kids and I have to go pick up my daughter. Since I'm the only adult at home, I have to take my 3-year old daughter on my trip to pick up the older one. The three year old insists on bringing the American flag that she got on July 4th. Fine. Why would that be an issue?

We jump on the subway, heading up to 59th and 6th -- the entrance of Central Park closest to Victorian Gardens. For some reason, I'm not thinking and we get off on 49th Street instead of 59th Street. I don't realize my mistake until I walk from 7th Avenue to 6th Avenue. Not a problem. We'll catch a cab for the final 10 blocks. Except here's when things start to go wrong. There are no cabs, and even if there were, they wouldn't get us anywhere quickly because apparently most of 6th Avenue was closed off due to a Dominican parade.

There are a lot of Dominican people on the street. Well, a lot for me at least, considering the only Dominican I know is Silera. It's not so packed that you can't move though, so I decide to walk the 10 blocks to the park. I pick my three year old up and head north. There are tons of Dominican flags. In fact, nearly everyone I see has a Dominican flag. I look at my daughter. Perhaps in response to all of the flags in the crowd, I realize that she his wildly waving her American flag over her head. I didn't see any dirty looks, and I didn't think it was a problem, but I did think it might have looked a little odd.

The question is, to the outside observer is, did we look like a couple of assholes? You have a bunch of Dominicans with Dominican flags, celebrating their culture, and in the middle of it is a white guy (who, yes, looks a bit jewey) carrying a blonde haired, blue eyed child proudly waving an American flag. Does that seem like we were saying "fuck you, Dominicans. You're in America!!!!!!!", did it look like some kind of solidarity with the Dominicans, or was it pretty innocuous?

You most likely won't see any of these people again and chances are, if you do, you won't be carrying a flag ;) so they won't remember you anyway.
