I'm heading to the city for a few days with my fiance tomorrow. Any suggestions for places to check out other than the obvious landmarks/tourist traps?

First off, if you see gum on the street, leave it there. It isn't free candy. Second, there are, like, thirty Ray's Pizzas. They all claim to be the original. But the real one's on 11th. And if you see a sign that says "Peep Show", that doesn't mean that they're letting you look at the new toys before Christmas.

But... They still have the world's greatest cup of coffee... Right?

Its the only touristy place I went to, but the Met was a great place to hang out. It did help that I went to bar 9 after that.

Good and pricey museums. Carry a pocket knife. And, China town is really neat.

McSorley's Ale House.

McSorley's is the oldest Irish tavern in New York City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City), located at 15 E. 7th St. in the East Village (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Village,_Manhattan). It was one of the last of the "Men Only" pubs. *

Not sure if it's walking around weather tomorrow,
but if you enjoy (odd) people watching, head to Greenwich Village.

Lotta nice restaurants as well, where you can eat outside,
and continue people watching.

You say other than touristy, but youre tourists, so anything you do will in fact be touristy.
So, go all out and head to the Empire State Building Observation deck.
Or, the Statue of Liberty's crown just reopened...

Yes, it's touristy, but where else are you gonna do that?

Being a yankee fan, you could also head up to see the new stadium.
I have yet to make it, but it looks like theres plenty to do there now even if there isnt a game.

Enjoy. And seriously, keep her purse between you and your chick.

Funny enough Chris, I had some family come out and we did almost everything you listed above. We also hit the Bronx zoo (pretty cool, just as I remembered it) and plenty more. Still I have to admit, it was nice to see the sites again touristy or not. I've been living in the NY area for ten years now and it was nice to slow down and check shit out once again. Going up to the top of the empire state building (2nd deck) was a real sweet as well.

One cool tip, we got to the statue too late for any trip to the crown, but the staten island ferry swings right by lady liberty with some real cool views of battery park and lower manhattan. There are tons of sight seeing tours that do the same thing for a price, the SI ferry is free both ways and my nieces loved it. It's almost the same f'n thing the statue ferry shows you, minus the main one that drops you off there to go up within normal hours (8-4 I believe). Just make sure to do the loop real quick once you get to Staten Island so you don't get stuck with the Hippo Brothers in Hell.

If you see someone masturbating don't be alarmed, simply masturbate along with them.

And, China town is really neat.

Ewww. No it's not.

Katz's deli is a touristy spot - but if you haven't been there before it's worth going to see what a $15 Ruben tastes like.

My real advice to someone coming to NYC ... go to Brooklyn and eat like a king. NYC sold it's soul. There's very few restaurants anymore that can compete with their Brooklyn counterparts.

China Town is great, there are some very picturesque spots like one of the few streets in all of new york city that bend a full 90 degrees (there are many fables about the street, i forget the name though) and the many temples in the area. Grant's Tomb is a great landmark and is free. The Cloisters is free with admission to the Met, but it's all the way across the island and way up north. Ellis Island is a great time, and Red Mangos are all over New York and is the single greatest frozen yogurt chain ever.

if you are a fan of O&A show and the comedians who are on it, go down to the west 4th street area, and go to the comedy cellar. one of the best comedy clubs in the city always a good lineup. also, that is a great part of the city to hang out in. do a search for bars and places to eat around there. there is a decent bar called fat black pussy cat.

There are plenty of places where you can still fuck for free.

Good and pricey museums. Carry a pocket knife. And, China town is really neat.

You are one paranoid cat.

This is just good advice where ever you go.

The Comedy Cellar is a great spot, and that's a good place to eat then catch the show.

A great thing to do during the day is to take a ride on the Water Taxi. Don't do the Circle line. The Water Taxi.

the Met is a great time.
if you want to just walk around, fuck times square. i mean, you have to see the awe of it, but really, head down town. bang a left and park on bleeker. lots to walk around and do there.

as a heads up.
a) city folk dress wierd as hell
b) if you want to see man on man love, head to the east village
c) your purse goes between you and your chick
d) your wallet goes in your right front pocket, your cash in your left front, and your license in another.
e) if you do go to canal street, try to avoid the Rollex, Folex, Rolax, etc.
f) avoid harlem, if you can.

most of all, have a good time.

depends what you are looking for. food? walks? architecture? culture? like, i could recommend a walk down the high line but maybe you think parks are dumb and prefer bars and nightclubs. or vice versa.

Go to http://newyork.timeout.com/ and have a look around. That site/magazine is the easiest way to know what is going on that is interesting.

Hungry?

Check out The Yaffa Cafe in the East Village.

It's on St. Marks Place between 1st Avenue and Avenue "A".

Funky little joint. The decor is kinda looks like Phoebe from FRIENDS handled it. There's also a deck in the back with a cool little vibe. Small place. Off the beaten. And the carrot dressing is so damn good, you'll wanna order it by the glass and drink it.

I also only did the touristy stuff when family and friends came to visit for the first time, and if they are shorter on money the Staten Island Ferry is always a must on the tour.

Walking around the city is awesome because of that. Everyone had it perfectly timed with the lights changing and shit when there was traffic... Walking out even before the light turned. Took no time to get it down. It's awesome walk out in front of some cabby in a hurry.

We're going again in May. This time we're taking a train down. It cost me $80 to valet my car for two days last time.

I've been looking at cool indy stores and was wondering if anyone had any favorites they'd suggest to visit? I looked through the lists on Time Out New York and found a few I wanna' check out. I especially dig the places with shit from all over the world. The more random the better.
