View Full Version : Neti Pots and Probiotics: Another Gvac recipe for happiness
Hey Doc...can you do me a really huge favor?
Please tell Opie to start taking a probiotic and tell Jimmy and Anthony to start using a Neti pot.
Thanks.
Every time I tune in I hear Opie complaining about his awful stomach and constantly having explosive diarrhea and Jimmy and Anthony seem to always have sinus trouble.
Sometimes I think I should be moderating this forum.

Doc,
Please ask O&A to talk about anything other than bodily functions and I'll moderate the forum...:smoke:

well, you'd probably be more TIMELY than I am.
Probiotics have recently been proven to work for irritable bowel syndrome and I put everyone on them now (http://astore.amazon.com/docsteheafort-20). I'm a recent convert to the probiotic side; trick is you have to get a high enough dose to work really well. Yogurts tend not to have enough to always be effective, but they're a good place to start.
Yimmy is another issue...since he talked on the air about his sinus surgery I can mention it here again. Not everyone who's had sinus surgery can use a neti pot...it depends on what they had done. In general, I'm a neti pot fan, though. Especially now ridiculous people look when they're doing it.

Do I really need a license to practice medicine?
I think I can help people with just my limited knowledge.

I have to chime in and say once you get over the weirdness on the Neti it is incredibly helpful. Really important and really beneficial in the long run.
Sinus issues *suck* bigtime. My oldest friend has finally chucked it in and is having a procedure next week for his chronic sinusitis called Balloon Sinuplasty. Look it up on YouTube but DO NOT I repeat DO NOT watch the videos immediately before or after eating.

I liked that vid as I was doing the Neti Pot research.
After my doctor recommended saline, and GVAC spoke the praises of the Neti, I bought one, but I have yet to get the nerve to do it.
One day soon, I will gather the bravery.

glad that guy trimmed his awful beard for his youtube debut. I can imagine all the nasal crap that gets stuck in that mess.

I've been in surgery for several balloon sinuplasties. It is a great idea, very simple, and not as violent as it may seem. Although I'm sure recovery is a bitch.

Stop being a bitch. Just use water that's warm (about body temp) or a saline solution(also warm) if you think you can't get your salt to water mixture right.

it's really not bad...as a matter of fact, it's quite pleasant once you get the hang of it. Don't laugh, cry, or try to breathe through your nose, and keep your head in position so the solution flows out your other nostril.

One thing that was mentioned in the articles I read (not that many -- one from USA Today, can't remember the others) was that w/ the balloon sinuplasty recovery is supposed to be LESS of an ordeal than w/ the regular sinus surgery.
I'll post back after he has it done.
I was thinking of making him a mix CD but all I can come up w/ so far is "balloon man" by Robyn Hitchcock and "99 Red Balloons" by what's her name. THere's gotta be more than that though ........

Umm. . .I know. I use one regularly. I was addressing PD's general bitchassedness and giving him some hints on making it a more pleasant experience.

no, I know, dude, I was trying to chime in and agree with your comment to PD, but I can see how it could be misinterpreted as I didn't understand your post. :-)

I have trouble with neti pots I just don't know the right way to lean. Sometimes I get it right on the money but other times I get salt water in my mouth. These pics and the video don't show the people leaning to much so I wonder what I am doing wrong. :(

Don't tip your head forwards or backwards, but to the side and slightly lean forward with your torso.

It doesn't have as much to do with your head tilt as it does the fact that you're opening your nasal passages.
I always tell people to talk like they're pretending they have a head cold. You breathe through your mouth and "shut off" your nose.
That's EXACTLY what you have to do when using the Neti pot. Don't open your nasal passages even for a split second.
