What is a fart exactly? Is it just air trapped in you from eating? Is it excrement from the beneficial bacteria doin their thang inside you?

Question for you is:

Why do shower farts smell so much worse than regular farts? Do the farts somehow react with moisture? Could this explain the Bermuda Triangle?

JULY!!! Oops, it's August already. Yeah, I'm about a month behind. Work, life, radio shows. RF.NET is just the place that doesn't give me a hard time for being slack.

No, and I'm not sure how that'd work, to be honest. If you read the notice at the top of the "Ask Dr Steve" thread, I do state that if you need an quick answer, email me directly. I just look at that inbox and shudder...I really just need to empty it out once and for all and then attend to it once every day or so and it wouldn't be so bad.

if you swallow air, it will be expelled from your body either as a burp or a fart. However, a lot of intestinal gas comes instead from bacteria fermenting sugars in the gut. The byproducts are carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide (STINKY!), and methane, among other things.

Honestly I've never noticed that shower farts smell worse than regular farts. If this was indeed true, I would guess that it's because the shower is an enclosed space and the gas can't escape as readily as it can when you're sitting at your desk at work. Chemically I can't dope out a reaction between intestinal gas and water vapor. It may be that your nose is more attuned to smells in 100% humidity than it is in drier air.

I'd be interested in other theories as well.

I just always assumed it was because there's no clothing to absorb the smell on the way out. You're getting 100% of the aroma standing nude in the shower.
